Atari 50 (2022, PC and VCS)

Played on Steam. With a Steam gamepad. That was connecting over Bluetooth.
Atari 50 is a compilation entry on Steam and the Atari VCS and some other systems, I assume. It is packed with interviews from game developers that made games for Atari (both coin-op and the home computers and the home consoles) and new games. And unreleased games. And emulated versions of Atari games from the 1980s. I think it is called Atari 50 because it was the 50 year anniversary of something, possibly Atari the corporation itself?

You get a good UI to navigate the different sections of the program. They realize that you probably just want to jump into a game, so if you press X when you start, you can select one. I tried out Food Fight.

We have Food Fight in a few different versions around here, and this version is certainly playable. There is no effort made to emulate a trick of real hardware that Food Fight has, which is the twin pots on the joystick that allow you to "look" in one direction and throw food without committing to moving Charley Chuck himself. For this, you just have to move and direct your food tosses at the same time, which is not a big deal. We're all very casual here.

Trying to get this going on the new VCS system resulted in the system restarting in the middle of a device update, which destroyed the wireless classic joystick that I had to buy to make the VCS work. I was able to quit Atari 50 without it bricking my Steam gamepad, so GOOD JOB THERE. I say that the Steam version is better because I was able to play other Steam games immediately and not have to wait 2.5 weeks and counting, like on the VCS.
An important thing for a web critic to consider!
