Go here. http://www.gamedrool.com/article.cfm?blog_id=1895

Read that. The guy who ran 3D0 into the ground had a problem with the review of one of his shitty reviews in Gamepro.

I will be talking about this ALL WEEK. It's fantastic.

There's like this whole sordid history to the videogames world that I missed out on coming of age with nothing but my endless free subscriptions to InterAction Magazine.

Trip's response went on so long that I ended up just skimming, but it did remind me of the IF Comp rec.games.int-fiction backlash to reviews in recent years, where people insist that reviewers forgive games for each fatal flaw on the off-chance that there's a redeeming quality later on.

Since the INDUSTRY EXPERTS at QT3 can't help, does anyone have any fucking clue why they waited four years until anyone can barely give a shit about 3D0 or the whole Green Plastic Toys© franchise to launch this? Okay, it transcends the date a bit, though it would have been better a few years early.

Haha, they approved your account at Quarter to Three? That's fantastic.

No idea why they waited so long. It's such a goldmine of content that I can't rip Gamepro for sitting on it though, even though that sort of thing is exactly why the gaming magazine industry is such a fucking punchline.

God, I'd love to write for a magazine that did nothing but give negative reviews to games. OK, I guess I wish I was born ten years earlier and in England so I could write for "Amiga Power." But still.

3D0 even died a while back, so unless they unveiled it for some sort of anniversary reason, I've no idea. You won't get anyone at Qt3 to doubt Gamepro for even a second, however -- that would involve game mags not being staffed by mostly incompetent and frightened shills.

Over at Gamedrool, the apologists are already out!
Trip Hawkins goes WAY back in the gaming industry - almost to the very beginning. If he didn't help found Electronic Arts (EA) he was certainly there at the helm very early on and helped them become what they are today. It isn't clear to me how and why EA and him parted company, but I know he ran 3DO immediately after his stint @ EA.

That's what makes his letter a little shocking. BUT, I think you're seeing a guy who is used to doing well, at the helm of a company that tried to launch its own console and that died, and now was trying to do a "Sega" and just be a game developer again all in the shadow of a hyper successful company you used to run (EA) and things just aren't going well. And that frustration just seeps out of that email.

And if you just try for a minute to put yourself in his shoes, you might understand how an ill conceived flame might get sent out . It was a crappy game, his company is getting pounded, he's probably under so much pressure he's crapping diamonds, and so he burped up that flame email almost 4 years ago. Cut the guy a break.

Hahaha, thanks, pal! I give a shit whether or Trip is under pressure when I am browsing the shelves at EB trying to find a game to buy. I honestly do. Maybe he wouldn't have been under so much pressure if he didn't continually sign off on WORTHLESS SHIT.

I think the apologists are funnier because they are four year late apologists.

"My game journalism pals did NOTHING WRONG!"

The best part is what I just learned -- Gamepro didn't leak SHIT. Some guy running Gamedrool did. Hahaha... 3D0 no longer exists and still they don't want to run the letter in print. Fucking pathetic.

EDIT: I just understood this whole thing.

I think the reason people don't like you on the Internet is because of your handle.

How about Captain Fantastic?

I was thinking about that to. Also, I can almost hear the grins across my CAT5 line when the fuckers realize they can associate my handle with worthlessness, I think Jack and CO pull it on the board a few times.

I just really love this nick. I've got some people who refer to me by it in real life, so it's just sort of stuck.

See, some kids in my school were these "COOL H4xx0r" kids. I mean I knew then and now that Phising for AOL passwords, generating little revenue, and arguing that HTML was the way to go and Bill Gates was a moron because he didn't write his own site weren't anything special. Still I hung out with the kids. More aptly I glanced at them, and chewed the inside of my mouth (old nervous tick) until they asked me if I wanted to sit with them. One time the one kid came in high and called me worm. I used it in Baldur's Gate and from there on my very first message board One Minute Left, where I told people they were fucking idiots for different reasons. It actually had a few posters who posted on OMM and thought they were special because of it. From there I went to Underdogs and never downloaded and saved their version of Daggerfall because HEH I owned retail, this is the only mistake I've ever made. From there I found ICJ's game, couldn't find some shit, and made my first post here, the first place on the Internet I went to that didn't blow. Somewhere after that my retail Daggerfall was destroyed in a basement flood, water and I still have not come to terms on this.

Do you need a new copy of Daggerfall?

Also, are you on-line at all with any of the HL2 games?

You sent me a copy awhile ago, it was messed up. I was going to snag one of Ebay, though 30 bucks for an old buggy game, that I OWN? Fuck that.
Ice Cream Jonsey wrote:Also, are you on-line at all with any of the HL2 games?
I could be. I usually only have the HL2 capable computer from 11 PM to 3PM the following day, though the friends system apparently is absolute shit, so I'll throw some shitty AIM on that computer if you want to gravitate toilets down one another's throats.
