Guests and Lurkers: LET'S HEAR IT FROM YOU!

Guest posting is turned off in a few bases due to the outrageous level of spamming this website has seen.

Someone really needs to explain to me why phpBB can't have a variable for "posting.php" and then reference that variable appropriately. I guess I just don't "get it."

But until I make that change myself or get a good answer, or switch forum software, I've turned off guest posting. "Please Forgive Me" -- Bryan Adams

When will you apologize for leaving this thread sticky long past its useful sticky life?

PLEASE unsticky this.

I don't think that they've really been properly apologized to yet. There may still be some new people who really haven't had time to digest the whole, "I can't post here as Winston R. Fagrocks." I'd just like to make it clear that as soon as phpBB.com lets you put in a custom word for "posting.php" (which would completely eliminate the fucking spam program HOW HAVE THEY NOT DONE THIS YET?????) then the anonymous posting is coming back!

Or, until you are able to convert their database to BBBB.

Whichever comes first.

Cannot "posting.php" be changed in the code? With a text editor?

Yeah, but then I have to change it every single time I upgrade phpBB (which sucks).

phpBB sucks. Not me having to do that. Wanted to clarify that.

Do you upgrade much?

How much time does a global search/replace take, versus not letting us post as guests?

Okay okay god in Heaven, I'll look into it.

I am also trying to get a co-sysop. Having another set of eyes to kill spam would be helpful.

Everyone but you likes and has fun with the spam.

We enjoy making witty quips and rejoinders.

You squelch our creativity.

So really, the spam is not much unlike any other new poster here.

Why don't you apologize to the spammers a few times, and then we'll all truly be home.

No.

The reason why spammers hit us so hard is because for whatever reason our Google rating is high. So if we link to them their Google rating gets higher. Fuck that.

I made a change that will hopefully stop spammers from registering accounts. If it works I will be implementing it to "posting.php".

Any chance of deleting the bogus spam accounts? It's cool to look like we have 200 registered users and all, but it's so far from truth that it pains me.

Which ones are there that you think are still spammy?

Oh, I dunno, about 150 of them.

Well, that went over like a led zeppelin. Hahah, phpBB... great job. Only thing I can think of is that the template I use has different settings. I'll give that a shot, but if it doesn't work I am switching software. This remains a fucking joke.

Someone should go use the search function to dig back into the past and see how long ago it's been since RobB first said he was going to change the board software.

Not me, but someone.

I said it, Lysander, because I've always hated this software.

I just turned off guest posting everywhere. The assholes had been sending fucking XXX messages out and that's going to get the site marked as "adult" on the various Big Brother programs out there. Fuck this shit.

I went to download all the files for phpBB last night, but my crappy FTP program fucking crashes if you try to download directories with directories in them. Jesus Christ.

I will be seriously investigating a forum software switch after April 1st. I was going to think about Invision, but I hear that people aren't stoked with that software, either. You can all yukk it up if I go with this, the worst available option, in the meantime.

Is VBullaton just something that happens to other people?
