Delicious PS3 internals

Post by Jack Straw »

Sweet, some crazy japanese dude took apart a perfectly good ps3 to take pictures of the yummy insides.
My inner nerd is delighted looking at these pics - this is a serious piece of kit. it's not just a "PC in a box" like the xboxes.. this took some serious design put into it.
it's in japanese, but pictures are easily translated ;)
some highlights...

george forman grill? I think it's kind of ugly, marcie thinks its sexay. what do YOU think?

alll major memory card formats represented

standard SATA notebook hard drive, people have successfully swapped in up to 750GB drives .. and this doesn't void the warranty! cool.

opening the case does though.

couple shots of the impressive cooling system.. the "cell" CPU gets so hot fans aren't enough, this thing has like a refrigerator/freezer mechanism inside!

the main CPU, "cell"

The main holdups with production and why they pushed the release date back is the bluray drives.. and the cell CPU. It has 8 cores on one chip and Sony was having production issues with reliably making the chips so they allowed for one defective core. ps3 only uses 7 cores and one is for the OS.. so 6 useable cores.

PS2-on-a-chip for hardware backwards compatibility.

eh, maybe you won't get as much enjoyment out of these than i did but the nerdy little japanese person inside me was happy to share them.
Anyone want to loan me 600 bucks?

No mod yet, although there is a facility to install an "other OS".. basically Fedora or Yellow Dog Linux at this point.

I would WAGER that although Sony must have been REAL careful in exactly what the Linux kernel has access to, that the entryway to unsigned code/a modchip will be through Linux or the other OS option. They couldn't have thought of everything, and if they locked it down as far as would be necessary to prevent a mod you wouldn't be able to do shit in linux.
