Hail all
it's Nihil Vulture here, now under a better pseudonym for my extreme noise project, MAYHEM DESTRUKTION... Well aside from that, I am working on a Roguelike... More like a continuation of a project I done long ago.... MinasMorgul! GCS (Game Creation System) I am using is called ZIG... I am taking a break from making the Ultima game, and the Anime RPG game I wanted to do for a long time... But Roguelikes have been my truest love... That and Black Metal... Take it easy guys, I will keep yall posted!

Hell yeah, dude. I love roguelikes. Aside from Nethack, the one I remember best is "Moria." My brother and I used to play the hell out of that back when there were very few games to pick from on the IBM PC (not a shot against Moria: we would have played it anyway).
Of course, I didn't know that "Moria" was a Lord of the Rings reference until those movies came out.
Definitely keep us posted as to your progress!

Hey guys
Thanks Jonesy, I can always count on your backing bro... How's the Black Funeral MP3 collecting going? Anyways, I am reading more and more of this Manual to ZIG (ZZT Inspired Game creation system), and it seems really easy to use, and to make states.. Hell, I might even make a Hydlide clone... But for now, MinasMorgul is it. ZIG, like Megazeux, can customize the ASCII/ANSI characters on the fly to how ever you draw it... So, if I wanted to , I can make a graphically unchallenged Roguelike... But me, I like simplicity ^_~ Now, I am off to the grind...
Hail Horror Hail

Why will I want to play your roguelike in preference to Nethack?
I'm not just trying to be a dick here. It's just, well, I play Nethack--badly--and when something new comes along I want to know how it differs from my poison of choice, and why I might want to switch to it.

My Roguelike

Well, my roguelike, isn't Nethack... So it may not be the best in the world... It will have some good stuff like the feeling of the old Rogue from Epyx and Gauntlet by Midway (the old Tenjen one mostly)... There's going to be 25 levels of Minas Morgul Tower, and I hope to make Binding Monsters to sell in the game, like Mordor... My more serious Roguelike will be called Orthanc (which is not only a JRR Tolkien word, but a Saxon word also)... It will feature better things then MinasMorgul can offer... MinasMorgul is a trial and error saftety net majig... While Orthanc is more of a larger endevor... Who knows it might even be a commercial game... All-in-all, MinasMorgul is not any better, or tries to be better then Nethack... It is what is... A Roguelike, of old school feelings, nothing more, nothing less...
And ORTHANC will be the enhancement of my Roguelike craze....

I think any roguelike, especially ZZT, has the advantage over Nethack of not killing you so unbelievably quickly. Think of it as asking why someone would be drinking vodka when absinthe is out there.

Nethack mostly kills you when you fuck up.
There
are people who can ascend 13 characters, one of each class, in a row. Marvin did this in the last tournament, I think.
It's just that most of us are only human.

Yeah. Don't get me wrong - I like Nethack. I like it with a basic graphics tile, but I could play it if only the monsters were tiles. (Like how I needed tiles for my dwarves in Dwarf Fortress, but I was otherwise OK with ASCII.) There just comes a time when you want other Nethack like games.
Man, I miss that Moria game. I should see if it's still around.
Anyway, ZZT is a fine game as well, and the level editor is also pretty fun (as I understand it). Nihil, you must finish your ZZT quest! As always, I am happy to provide hosting and so forth.

Hey guys, sorry for the third and final name change... Nihil here, this time it's (cough) War! Haha, just joking, some of you out there would get my joke, if you know your Black Metal history (Burzum)... Anyways, just wanted to key you in on my Rogue Hack game, MinasMorgul, and introduce you to my newly named project - FUNERAL LORD... FUNERAL LORD has been a name of an old old project I had since the days of discovering Black Metal... I wanted to do Black Metal so much, that all I can do is make (when it was possible) a Black Metal gathering on MSN Chat before it was closed to the open public.... All in all, I have the means, now that my distortion pad is on the fritz, I have an amp to back up... Anyways... MinasMorgul (most likely gonna be called MazeHack or MonsterHack) is still in the planning process... Hopefully I will not make the monster too damn hard or too damn easy... I am still studying the manual
BTW, Jonsey, it's not really ZZT, it's ZIG, ZZT is cool, but ZIG is to me, is a better one, because of not only the ANSI/ASCII customizing, but also the sidebar customizing also... Check out the ZZT website... It turns out it isn't that popular, however dot comma, but it is a good Roguelike Engine!
Well guys gotta go
Hail Black Metal and Roguelikes Hai!!!

All right, shut up everyone. We're all going to get the Vulture graphical port for Nethack and play it. OK? Just once. Till you die?

After installing the free version of the Vulture pack, I now have to deal with Desura whenever I boot up my computer, so ICJ I ask - is it worth dealing with another digital distribution service to play this game?

Yeah, Desura's the only other one. I'll never willingly put another one on this computer. I had to put the latest Might and Magic on the laptop because I am sticking with Steam and Desura and that's it.
