A Message for Robb

Spam has been a real problem lately, culminating with one person posting four of the exact same threads. This can be remedied with one of those Captchas we all keep bitching about.

One Captcha provider is called reCaptcha. reCaptcha uses the input from users to digitize books: any words that the computers at archival places can't detect are used as Captchas.

It's also free, and they even provide a handy plugin for phpBB:

http://recaptcha.net/plugins/phpbb/

So, how about it, Robb? It looks like it only takes a few minutes to set up, and comes with the double benefits of no spam and more free e-books.

Oh shit. Sorry, Lysander, I forgot. :(

now I feel like a dick

edit: Actually, reCAPTCHA's website says this:

"Most other implementations of CAPTCHAs block visually impaired individuals, who cannot read images of distorted text. reCAPTCHA, on the other hand, has an audio test that allows blind people to freely navigate your site."

Maybe?

Isn't it going to be a catchpa for registering and guest posting anyway?

Is this a captcha for registered users to input? There is a good and working one for guest posters, but phpbb does not do a good job implementing a captcha for user registrations (as you can see by the hundreds that get in a month). I'm not sure there is any way to fix the issue through registration with phpbb. You can hide them, but they still appear.

According to the website the CAPTCHA shows up on the user registration page. Thus, it could prevent bot registrations while not bothering Lysander.

WIN-WIN.

OK, cool, that sounds perfect. I'll give it a shot.
