The Five Text Games I Want to Complete in 2008
- Savoir-Faire seems to be an old-school Infocom styled adventure with a magic system and sense of humor. Plus Emily has been very nice to review many of my games.
- shrapnel seemed to give Ben a good time, a good roll in the hay if you would, so why not take an hour and finish it?
- Book and Volume was given to me on a Flash drive by Nick at the 2007 CGE, and I have a rule about playing games that authors give me. (Er, which is, to do so.)
- The Pawn, seriously, it's been over 20 years, time to wrap this adventure up!
- Future Boy! is a game I have not played all the way through. I should effort to not let it go 20 years like I did the Pawn.
Do YOU, the JC Denizen, have similar aims for 2008??!!

I need to finish Necrotic Drift (I gave up at the very end because I couldn't figure out how to prevent the mummy from killing me), Fail-Safe because Robb put it on his Top 100 Games list, and Bad Machine because it's cool and it makes me feel smart just to figure out what the hell it is saying.
I love IF but I'm not very good at it :(

Oh, no! This is something we could work around with the proper application of an earthly element. Let me know if you no longer have your save game file, I am sure I can whip something up.hygraed wrote:I need to finish Necrotic Drift (I gave up at the very end because I couldn't figure out how to prevent the mummy from killing me)
It is about twenty-five minutes of pure, concentrated gaming intensity!Fail-Safe because Robb put it on his Top 100 Games list
Oh yeah, I want to do that one, too. We should do a SA-style "Let's Play" thread for Bad Machine here. In fact, if I don't forget, I'll try starting one tonight.and Bad Machine because it's cool and it makes me feel smart just to figure out what the hell it is saying.

I doubt I've played five IF games in the last two years, but for the inevitable lonely night when I fire one up, I'd pick:
Lost New York. Frequently started, never finished.
Cryptozookeeper.
Witness. I don't think I've finished any of the Infocom mysteries other than Deadline.
Spider and Web. See Lost New York.
Suspended. I have a feeling I will never really like it, but I've never given it much of a chance.

I-0: Jailbait on the Interstate - I've played Cadre's Phototopia and Shrapnel and thought both were fantastic, so I'm looking forward to this sassy one.
Spider and Web - Another renowned classic I've been meaning to play for awhile.
Knight Orc - Robb's little shrine to this game has piqued my interest.
City of Secrets - This looks like it could be a quite good combination of a large, atmospheric, semi-open-ended environment with more traditional puzzleness.
1893- A World's Fair Mystery - Same thoughts as with City of Secrets.

Floatpoint by Emily Short. I've played most of her other games and know quality is always assured. Savoir Faire is like one of my all time favourite text games.
Slouching Towards Bedlam This one won the 2003 xyzzy best game award. I should probably make the effort to at least play the games that win each year's 'best game' title.
Varicella I've tried this a couple of times and always got ridiculously stuck. I don't think I realised it was a 'die to progress' sort of game. Plus the writing was awesome.
Blighted Isle by Eric Eve. This game came out recently, as looks pretty ambitious and sizable, yet seems to have gone without much comment. I started playing but got distracted... I want to go back and finish it, and write some sort of insightful review that will constitute my contribution to the IF community for this year.
Finally, maybe I'll play some infocom game (they were a bit before my time), maybe Trinity (supposed to be easy).

The issue is that, should I finish it, I'd never be able to go back and play it again.Game Pinner wrote:I think Jonsey should complete Knight Orc. Who goes around talking about something as the best game ever in history and then doesn't even finish it?
How do you know it doesn't suck at the end?
What do the rest of you think? Should I finish it? I have one last puzzle to do, literally the last one. I sort of know what is supposed to happen and intentionally haven't 100% completed it because it would seem "dead" to me thereafter.
But should I???

If it's as great as you say, then even after you finish it, it should still be enjoyable to go back and inhabit that world, like visiting the site of a cherished childhood memory, strolling down the street with a light smile, waving happily to those lucky enough to cross your joyous path.
It would never be dead. It would always be there. For people.
For you.

Lovecraftian Interactive Fiction Games
Hey guys, if you like Howard Phillip Lovecraft (aka the HP), and love Text Adventures/Interactive Fiction... Here's a small list of games to consider:
Anchorhead - Damn good IF game! It is logically driven, not whole lot of puzzles, just good ole story telling in the vein of the HP! - ZMachine game
Theatre - It prolly has something to do with The Thing At The Threshold, don't quote me about it (and I think it was Nightgaunt, or a Baakee (sic) that the foozle is. - ZMachine Game
The Lurking Horror - An AWESOME Infocom game about GUI University (actually, from what I gathered, GUI U is modeled from MIT), very Lovecraftian, one of the first Infocom lines with SOUND, rather then eye candy graphics... The sounds serve very much as ambience... There's even an Alchemy Department in the game... Awefuckensome!
NON LOVECRAFTIAN GAMES I LOVE
Wishbringer - Infocom title, very enchanting, you play a tormented mailboy, who must save the sleepy town from the Dark One, after she kidnaps an old lady's companion, a lil kitty... Avoid the Boot Patrol (yes, I do mean a march of disembodied marching combat boots!!! Giant combat boots.... smelly leather... ummm, you get the picture), save platipusses, and become the hero! Written by the great Brian Moriarity
ZORK Trilogy - Damn I love these games!!! I do not care much tho, for the Anthology, I rather the great Trilogy.... Infocom titles... Deffinately something that won't disappoint you true IF players!!!
The Horror of Rylvania - A TADS game by Adventions... Definately a must!!! It has an original story, feels alil like Polarware's Transylvania series, but still original...
Trinity - Another Infocom game written by Mr. Moriarity... A must for all to see ^_~
A Mind Forever Voyaging - Gorgeous prose, of a robot who strives to become human. -Infocom game
Now, hopefully one day I will have the courage to bring forth an IF game, primarily in ALAN... But I must be vigilant with ACK, and the game called USURPER... I apologize to those who might think I am actually taking the short cut by making Ultima First Age-like characters... I feel I must do this as a retro and nostalgic feel of the Ultima series...
Well I said my peace, and I hope yall like my list! ^_^ My album, for Nightblood, is still in works, I might finish by tomorrow.... One song is done so far, called "Oath of the Horns"

My BM Project
Hey ICJ
Sure thing man, I am doing more ambient guitaring rather then the structured feel... it's Raw BM, therefore there are some repative constances
I will keep you all up to date with my music and my game(s)
