Sub games.

Okay, so Pinner and I decided we want to get the best sub game ever made. BEFORE SOMEONE SAYS GATO we mean on the PC. For Windows XP or Vista.

I have Windows XP. He had Vista. The rhymes are Daryl's, but the burgers?

Ronald's.

Anyway, I have a backlog - Fallout 3 and Persona 4. So I won't actually be able to play this until, like Q3 2009. Ben is frustrated, though, because the terrible game he has been playing has naval combat and it is not satisfying.

Can anyone recommend a sub game for Windows?

Ben found this website: http://www.subsim.com/index.php and goddamn, they aren't fucking around. But we need the list distilled a little.

My "gaming machine" runs XP, not Vista.

I mean, isn't half the fun of a sub game BEING on the sub?

Sub game problem: SOLVED!

The game is "Silent Hunter: Wolves of the Pacific", or "Silent Hunter 4" to fans of the series, which I wasn't. It is available on Steam for $19.99!

It has terrible documentation and is way too hard to learn, but it's SO FRIGGIN' SWEET you just want to keep trying.

Radar! Sonar! AA guns! Hiding out in the depths of the Pacific! Raising periscope to peek out and land a few torpedos into some dumbass merchant ship! Getting hammered by a Japanese depth charge and sinking to your way to a watery grave!

SWEET!

As an example of being hard to learn and having terrible documentation, I have yet, after three tries, to finish the fourth and final "tutorial" missions.

In keeping with its bad documentation, the "tutorial" missions don't actually offer any assistance, they are just "really easy missions". Except, I guess, for the fourth one.

BUT ANYWAY SWEET!!! Best game ever!

FOUR **** STARS!

I have nothing useful to add to this thread so I will tell this story instead.

On the north side of Oklahoma City there are several properties lined up in a row: Remington Park (horse racing/casino), a movie theater, the Zoo, the Omniplex (er, Oklahoma Science Museum) and a bunch of lesser attractions (Firefighter Hall of Fame, Softball Hall of Fame, etc.)

At the Oklahoma Science Museum they have an authentic submarine periscope. For years nobody ever looked through it because there was nothing to see. The last 5 times we've been there, there has been a line of grown men waiting to look through it. I never knew why until the last time I went. The periscope points right toward the horse racing track and you can watch the horses run and see the results.

The only other submarine story I have (and it's not even a story) is that I've been on the U-505 Submarine Tour at the museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. Even at the age of 16 I was banging my head on stuff in there. Sailors must be really short. Or maybe they just have better "spacial head relations" than I do.

The last submarine games I played were Up Periscope! and Silent Service, both for the C64. Probably not what you were looking for.

This is the best submarine story I am likely to hear in 2009.

The burnt copy of Die Hard Arcade I sent you with that Sega Saturn includes Deep Scan as a way to get extra lives. It's a pretty great sub game.

EDIT:
Additionally: the Deep Scan game for the TI-83.

Up Periscope! was my favorite. Used to play that for hours (while watching TV) Never got the hang of the big map, tho.

Unfortunately, Ben has detailed to me that the game has some bugs that are fixed in the 1.4 version.

If you buy the game from Steam... you cannot patch the game to 1.4. I know! I know, right? I know!!

Amazon has SHIV (my favorite acronym for a game) AND the expansion pack for $23, AND you can patch it to 1.4.

Steam... you lose!

Additionally Steam cannot tell everyone what you're playing right now because they broke all the other non-valve notification trying to fix it for one game(Mass Effect), and just left it that way rather than rolling back the changes. It's been this way for weeks too.
