Tomorrow morning I'm getting in my truck and starting a three day, 1,400 mile (one way) road trip. Before I set out on a road trip, I always round up all the music I want to listen to. One funny thing is that I always pick both new albums that I haven't listened to yet, and old classics. Before the trip I always convince myself that I'll enjoy listening to new albums, but once I'm in the car all I do is listen to the old classics that I can sing along with.

What are your old standby albums for road trips? Off the top of my head I can tell you that on every single road trip I've ever taken I've listened to Alice in Chain's Dirt, either Sgt. Pepper or Abbey Road by the Beatles, Appetite for Destruction by Guns and Roses, and at least one album by the Beastie Boys.

(This year's trip will be different; I now have a 1TB drive, so I'll be taking EVERYTHING. Won't that be fun to browse while driving ...)

Tom Petty's a must for long trips (and getting over relationships). Rush too. For city driving and errands I prefer Rage Against the Machine, Biggie, and NWA.

Once it gets dark I listen to lots of Tom Waits and the Cowboy Junkies.

During the day, Fred Eaglesmith and the Drive-By Truckers.
