Just quoting this for now. Needless to say... Jesus fucking Christ - Microsoft does EVERYTHING FUCKING WRONG.

I honestly think I have enough anecdotes to officially be "against" them now. Here's the process I had to follow to get my 360 to see my PC, even though everyone involved was getting to the Internet just fine through the router:
Hi guys.

I had the same problem and just found a solution that finally allowed my PC to see my XBox. I thought I'd post it here so the rest of you can finally overcome this issue. All credit goes to Alex (OldSchoolGamer) on the www.technologyquestions.com forums for providing this answer:

*****

Ok this is not an issue with a firewall, it took me 3 calls and about 12
transfers to get an answer. For phone help dial 1800-4MY-XBOX then get to
live console help and ask to speak to the hardware department. Describe
issue, most likely will get transferred a couple times till you end up back
at the hardware depart, let them know its a pc failed message. They can walk
you through it.

Its basically a DRM (data rights management) problem. Steps to fix are as
followed:

Click start, go to run
type services.msc
go to Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service
double click it and hit stop

then you will need to be able to see all hidden files and folders:
Open my computer window, and click on the tools tab at the top and select
folder options, and click the view tab

Scroll down make sure show hidden files and folders is shown
then scroll further down and uncheck hide protected operating system
files(recommended)

then you must delete the DRM files in Windows Media center folder:
Click on My Computer, choose your harddrive (usually C:) click on documents
and settings folder, then All Users Folder, and you should see DRM folder
Double click DRM folder
Control and a to select all the files, then shift delete (to skip sending to
the recycle bin), then hit yes, now close this window

Go back to run, type services.msc and highlight Windows Media Player Network
Sharing Services and right click and select start, this should fix the
problem varify you are still sharing the connection via windows media player,
library tab, share media option, and that it still sees your xbox,

restart xbox: go to media tab and select music, choose computer it should
now search and (yes finally) find your computer

Have a nice day

What a rigmarole just to get them to talk to each other.

I know every time my kid brought his 'box home from college during the summer of Christmas my media center thing would detect that it was in the wireless range but I was never able to hook them up. I really didn't try seriously, but I always got some Media Center error. You'd think Microsoft would make it easy or something.

I do all my streaming through the PS3. I run Twonky on my PC and the PS3 has no problem streaming video, music and photos to our television. I haven't ever tried with the 360.

Twonky, huh? Is that better than Tversity? I might have to try that out.

I had a problem with my old router that didn't support IP address reservation (I'd always have to reboot my router to get it to connect again). It's good to use that (IP address reservation) if you can see the computer but are having trouble connecting.

Right, that part worked just fine. It was then getting the things to actually display video that was fucked up.

I've still never watched something via the 360 that way - it can't handle mkv files and it can't handle avis coded with that old Divx :*_( codec that ... well, I still don't know what was up with that. How the hell did a codec get the same name as a retarded service from Circuit City? And who names something with a smiley face?

Anyway, such tech is WELL BEYOND my 360, ho ho ho! So no Fallacy of Dawn trailer through it.

Which might be for the best.

Unfortunately, only WMP 11 or later supports sharing, and Windows Server 2003 only supports WMP 10 and earlier. It's a bunch of bullshit and I tried a hundred different hacks to get WMP 11 on Windows Server 2003. No dice.

I really, REALLY wish that Microsoft could have just given a blank check to the kids who made the Xbox Media Center. It was perfect, and it was finished.

I can't believe my Xbox's network plug died. Now I get to choose between hard-modding another original Xbox, or fixing the network port. I wish to do NEITHER.
