I was paying a guy to watch for paperwork, but he failed me.

On June 28, 2009 the new landlord got an order for possession of the place I was living at. On August 4, the order was served and I and my possessions were unceremoneously dumped on the front lawn.

Well, not entirely me. Since I'm handicapped the county had to do something and put me in a homeless shelter. I salvaged a few things but I lost almost everything.

It's been interesting and I've decided to do a comic about it. Ben I borrowed another idea from you. When you used the on-line moniker "Tam O'Shanter" on the Bull & Finch Pub, I decided to use that name for the main character of the story.

I was admitted to the shelter on August 4. At least for Prince George's County, Maryland, the maximum time they'd allow me to stay was 60 days. They found me a place where the owner was willing to make some changes to make his place 100% accessible. Mostly it was making the bathroom door wider, and putting in two ramps, one at the step at the end of the walkway, and one at the front door. So basically, I have my own private bathroom in my room, and I can get in and out of the house without assistance.

The place wasn't ready until October 8, so they gave me a four-day extension. Then for about another two months or so, about all I did was sleep or go out to get food. I am just now coming out of what happened. As I note in this youtube video,

For what? This was a legal eviction carried out by the Prince George's County Sheriff's Department. I am going to go after the son-of-a-bitch I was paying to prevent this from happening, and if I can find him, I'm going after my ex-landlord Carlton Robinson (no relation) for collecting rent that ran beyond the date of foreclosure. (Technically he is entitled to rent up to the foreclosure and can file for eviction for non-payment up to that date.)

What got me was that he was in foreclosure for a year before he even rented me the room and never said a word. This was one of the things that John, the guy at the homeless shelter, told me he checked, that the new landlord I rent a room from is not now in any legal issues over this place.

John's eyes popped when I was talking to Davis, my new landlord, when I mentioned that the house was built in 1944 and I confirmed that I had Davis' correct home address. I went up on the Internet and confirmed Davis was the owner and from the tax records for Prince George's County Maryland I had his home address.

I do know how to do due diligence when it comes to renting a place.

When I was moving out to Sterling, Virginia, I was subleasing a room from one of the tenants, Darren. So about a week after I moved in, he mentioned some problem with the place that the landlord was coming over to take a look at (and also to get my information and arrange to have me added to the lease). I told him that I was aware of it because Barry (the landlord) had called me too.

His question was basically, how the hell did the landlord know to call me? So I told him that when I agreed to rent the place, I went up on Loudoun County's tax records on the Internet, looked up the owner's name and address, went on Superpages to look up his phone number, then called him, identified myself and left a message on his voice mail telling him that someone named Darren was renting me a room at his house on Brookfield Circle, if he was not authorized to do that, could he call me at my number.

Darren just said "ok" when I told him, he wasn't surprised that I had checked him out. Turns out the reason the room I was renting became available was because he threw the previous roommate out after he got in a fight and was arrested by the cops, plus he cheated him out of some money he was owed. So he understood about someone checking out the person whom he would be giving money to.
