If you're into retro-gaming at all, and want to rediscover some of your favorite old classics, head over to gog.com.

Titles of interest:

Complete Baldur's Gate set
Icewind Dale
Planescape: Torment
Castles 1+2
Sacrifice
Giants: Citizen Kabuto
Fallout 1+2

Many more...

How do you feel about their recent stunt to make it seem like they went out of business? Frankly, I found it so laughably unprofessional I decided to never give them a cent. Plus, there was an interview conducted with one of them afterwards where they said, "Yeah, we'd do it again."

I think it took an alarming amount of stupidity for a company that sells virtual things to remind everyone how fragile their business is. The IDEA is awesome, I just wish someone other than those retards implemented it.

If it was indeed a stunt (and I have a theory that it might in fact have been a technical or financial glitch that they're trying to cover up) it wasn't the best idea. i don't think they've hurt themselves seriously, but even if it was a pre-arranged PR gag to get free publicity, I don't think it was a good idea overall. I'm not pissed off, but if I had been in charge I wouldn't have run with it. It's true they do sell virtual products, but since there's no DRM, as long as you have your copy downloaded and safe on your hard drive if they go out of business it doesn't hurt your ability play games you've bought.

I think "I'll never give them a cent" might be a bit of an overreaction - they still sell great games for real cheap, and they're yours forever no matter what happens. But yes, I can see how people might have gotten upset.

But Jonesy, now they have Temple of Elemental Evil! I seem to recall this being one of your all-time favorites.

(Stunt was really stupid, but I love the fact that I can replace my...donated copy of Planescape and Baldur's Gate with the real thing. Also because there's just so damn many games on there I never got to play back in the day, and now I can, for cheeep!)

I never played it, but it is one of my favorite video game disasters. Although my friend Bill played it and wrote this review about it: http://www.caltrops.com/review0026.php

I was pretty pissed off by the "we're out of business...just kidding!! lolz" stunt as well. But I was too tempted by a recent weekend discount sale on Masters of Magic & Longest Journey (the latter being insanely difficult to get running on recent Windows machines - taking care of that is the best thing gog offers imo) to maintain my moral outrage.

The lack of DRM means if that when/if they go out of business for real, I should still be fine if I've burned the install packages to CD/DVD.
