How The Christ Do I Start Star Control 2

There were a couple games on my top 100 list that were there because I read absolutely everything I could find on them, and not because I got really far with them. Star Control 2 is one such game.
What the hell are you supposed to do, to start this game?
EVERY TIME I go to play it, I go to Pluto and then try to leave the solar system and get killed. Can anyone help? Here's a screenshot:
