A RETROROMPER REVIEW OF....

Race into... SPAAACE... &
Coconut-Custard Meringue Pie

The pie itself is a subtle twist on the normal Custard Meringue: adding coconut gives it a distinctive charm and extra sweetness that compliments the texture well. Such as is -Race into SPAAACE- because here, we have a traditional point and click subtly altered to be an accurate simulation of the Cold War rush to the Moon: an interface akin to Day of the Tentacle or Star Trek: Judgement Rites, is altered to provide an accurate way of controlling and maintaining the crucial functions of launching a rocket into the heavens. Finding such an unusual pairing of simulation with point and click, gives the same odd combo and properties that the coconut provides to the custard.

But as the coconut provides a sweetness and counter balance to the usually tart custard, so does the fact that the game gives the opportunity to peek inside both NASA and the (rough) Russian equivalent: the propaganda or nationalist machine isn't running here and we are reminded as a player with a broader view, why Russia is still running a successful commercial space port while the US of A is auctioning the Space Shuttle to either the Smithsonian, Uncle Bob's Discount Government Scrap, or playing joust with multibillion dollar equipment.

The soft, flaky crust is important in both game and pie, as the context and the flavor permeate either experience, giving a counter balance to both the winning and losing sides of either venture (SPOILER: the Coconut won and the Soviets lost).

I love strawberry pie. Back almost 25 years ago when I lived in Southern California you could get it almost anywhere, most stores carried it. I'm talking about ordinary snack pies like apple or cherry that Hostess and a half-dozen other companies make.

Out here, you can't find strawberry pie for love or money. About 5 years ago I found some at a gas station in Fredericksburg, VA, and the guy probably never saw someone buy 10 pies so fast. That was all he had. I husbanded those pies as extreme rewards, limiting myself to one a week.

Come to think about it, it can't be that hard, the dollar store sells canned strawberries, I can probably make one. This would, of course, be a full-sized pie like a typical apple or cherry.

Let's find a pretty girl and pay HER to make a strawberry pie, wearing only a second, made-previously, strawberry pie.
