Oh man, this is way more money to pay than I expected

I just got my bill from Merrick Bank for my Visa card for this month. As I pay it down to zero each month this is exclusively new charges within the last 30 days.

$684.14

I looked at the numbers, and thought something was wrong or that I'd been mischarged, but I recognized every charge from the different places I use and the amounts look okay. In fact, because of a $44 credit for a returned item, my bill is $645. But it still shocked me.

Nothing unusual or excessive there, I just basically spent what I had to. I realize that about $200 of this is unusual expenses, a couple of specialized books I bought, a replacement ink cartridge, and a doctor's bill, so I understand why it's a bit high, but I probably need to be a bit more cautious.

This much in one month plus the rent for my room and that's more than my social security direct deposit. Which comes into my credit union tomorrow. Oh I can afford to pay it all -that's why I do have savings - and will pay it all this month, it's just that I hadn't realized how easy it is to spend too much if you're not careful.

I realize that I have about a week's more food than I usually have on the day before my check comes in, so I have to figure that part of the higher cost is that I have bought more food than I usually do. But there were a number of sales, Target had hamburger for $2.50 a pound, the usual price is close to twice this; in fact I usually buy hamburger at Giant because they have 3-pound rolls for $9, sometimes less.
