Is this a regional thing? Because I have never seen a restaurant nor an individual place sauce, cheese nor veggies below a beef patty.

I've never noticed it either, nor do I make burgers that way myself.
I suspect the reason is because all the taste buds are on the tongue, and the meat is the most important part of the burger, thus you'd want the meat closer to the tongue. People buy a burget to taste the meat, primarily. If they want to taste the fixings they'll buy a salad.

Well, they must have changed it, because they never did them that way when I had them, back when I lived in Long Beach back thru Winter '87, when we moved to DC. Most definitely burgers on top of the fixings. two of them, covered with mustard, onions and hot sauce.

Burger on top is the correct answer, for the following reasons:
1. Quality: Having the "toppings" underneath prevents the juice from the burger from soaking into the bottom bun and making it mushy.
2. Convenience: You lay your bottom bun out ahead of time, put all your "toppings" on it, and then grill your burger. When the burger's done, you put the top bun on top of it, jam the spatula underneath the whole thing and just lay it on top of the bottom bun. Done.

Sure we can! Now we have wilted vegetables, a bottom bun soaked through and falling apart and we look like COMPLETE ASSHOLES. Definitely this is the better solution compared to creating proper sandwiches.

Who really cares about what random assholes think?
I mean, to relate to this article, ask most guys what's the right position in sex and most would say the meat goes on top, which is probably why they also like burgers that way; the condiments are supposed to just lay back and enjoy what the meat does to them!
