Sorry for posting that 1 picture twice like that. Maybe someone can remove it.
So.. yeah the "blackness issue" is still my main issue here, but I came across this
http://www.neo-geo.com/forums/showthrea ... 29-chassis today and I think that should take care of that flyback buzzing so I can at least play some more before tearing the thing completely down.

This guy also had the "blackness" issue and fixed it. Sounds like his tube being worn out was the main issue.

Spent an hour turning knobs. Looking much better. Apparently the color gain levels needed to be turned down a bit and the cutoffs turned up. Still some darkness issues, but now I see a lot more brown, yellow, and grayish-blue stuff.

Some adjusting later, there are just obviously missing colors here and there, no longer how the gains and cutoffs are adjusted.
Finally located a capkit. The one mentioned in guides is no longer made, but this one matched and I ordered it late last week:

The flyback is still buzzing off and on though.. and lately more on than off. I don't think the toothpick trick is going to cut it much longer, and would like to replace the flyback transformer. Now if I can just find the right one to order..
