Actually, and I fucking hate to say it, Pinback is right... but, and I do like saying this, for the wrong reason.
When a BBS would hang up on you, you would see the +++, but every BBS that would do that (which would mean ones using Hayes-compatable commands - and let's face it, some of us come from the days when there was no such thing as "Hayes-compatable" and hence, there were other ways to drop carrier without the user dialing in to think that the BBS thinks that he's a plus kind of guy)...
Ah, shit, too long of a paranthetical. So, I'll start over, without 'em.
When a BBS would hang up on you, you would see the +++, but every BBS that would do that would then hang up on you without you seeing anything. +++ would put the modem into command mode, which would mean that the commands would be local and not sent to the remote user.

Jesus, if you you people are going to be a bunch of fucking nerds, at least be correct about it.
(Technically, there may be some obscure command in tha Hayes set to allow remote users to see the local commands on the remote modem, but geez, I sort of doubt it, and if there was, then you'd have to be dumber than Gomer Pyle to use it.)
