Yes. "snap" is much funnier. Quake is just part of the first level. Just like the Doom IF game, actually. You do not actually need the PAK file, although it would be great if you did--it could check for it, at least, and refuse to run if it did not find it.
I do hate Slashdot on 4/1. I think the front page of Caltrops.com says it best:
