A respectable 106.

This game is not designed for play by someone with low vision and only one usable hand. It just got to be too easy to get killed by shrapnel (smaller pieces of the broken larger asteroids.)

The opening screen should include instructions as to what keys to use. Maybe there could be a way to modify key selection so someone can use the keys easiest for them, considering how hard this game is.

Nice, baby!

Correct!
The opening screen should include instructions as to what keys to use.
It will, but to summarize:

Left/Right: Turn
Up: Thrust
Z: Shoot
X: "Phase Shift" (go invulnerable for two seconds)
Maybe there could be a way to modify key selection so someone can use the keys easiest for them, considering how hard this game is.
Without add-ons, PICO-8 just supports arrow keys, Z and X, so it's not convenient for me to allow customizations. And my convenience is very important to me.

Thanks for trying it, though, TDR!

My highest is 748, with a lot of games ending in the 500s.

If I had one request, I would get rid of the dark red color. It may just be my monitor, but the darker red asteroids are almost impossible to see here. It seems like every one of my game ends by after being blindsided by an asteroid I didn't see because of that one color. It's also possible I'm color blind or something.

So, if a thing we didn't like about original Asteroids was that the UFOs would appear and people would leave one rock on the machine and pick off UFOs, can we add that and make it so they only appear if there's like 4 or more asteroids on the screen?

952. Still haven't earned an extra man.

What I would do is send out one UFO the first time, then two, then three, and so on. Can't pick 'em all off!

I'm curious about the code that delays making your ship appear until there are no asteroids near. Was that hard to do?

Thank you! I have removed several of the dark colors from the list, so hopefully your experience has improved.

It was not. Every frame, it already has to check to see if any asteroid is colliding with your ship. So for that, it's just checking to see if any asteroid is colliding with a large invisible square in the center of the screen. If not, then it's safe.

No kidding. By the way, since 1978, all works have been automatically protected by copyright. Also, the United States joined the Berne Convention in 1989. Starting in May 1989, copyright notices became optional. Under pre-1989 and especially pre-1978 law, publication without copyright notice forfeited copyright protection. Now, it doesn't matter except for very narrow issues of "innocent infingement" which reduces potential damages but does not eliminate them.

Tsummary: Copyright notices have been optional, and not required, for over 30 years.

By the way, I'm sure you're aware until you file and register the copyright with the copyright office, you can't enforce the copyright? You can't sue, you can't get a dime in damages. Like Willy Wonka in his office, if your copyright isn't registered before the infringement occurred, the courts will say to you, "You get nothing! Good day, sir!"

I've also made a few changes to hopefully spice things up and make the game a little more forgiving and interesting.

1. Phase shifting no longer disables your ship. You're free to fly, fight and fuck whilst phased!

2. Every once in a while, you will mine a special asteroid. You'll know it when you see/hear it! If you fly into this special asteroid, you get an extra phase, AND fifty whopping points, making your quest to the next free ship a little easier.

OOOoo Easter egg asteroid! Brilliant!

It's much better with a real keyboard instead of a phone. Saw the magic rock but couldn't get to it.

Feature request: disable the phase button while I'm in phase mode. A couple of times I've hit it twice and wasted one.

What are the odds of getting a special asteroid? 1/50? 1/100? (I know what the odds of me shooting it are... about 97%.)

1 in 50 chance for each little one to be special.

I will disable the phase button while you are in phase mode, thank you. This update won't go up until the alien ship is done, but it'll get there.

Not worth adding, but I noticed that there's no thrust animation when moving during phase mode.

I would like a special mode for me that quits and restarts the the if you die with less than 100 points to save me from doing it manually lol.

1340. Until the latest changes, I followed a strict no phase strategy -- I felt like phasing was a distraction and it was better to turn, move, or turn and move your way out of danger so you could get a few shots in as well. I think my high score using this strategy was around 1100. Now that I can move, turn, and shoot while phased it's a whole new game. In retrospect, I realize I lost a lot of ships unnecessarily by refusing to phase even in the hairiest of situations. Still, I'm glad I developed my non-phase game as you still need it when you run out of phases or want to preserve phases. Once I get phasing down, I fully intend to challenge Ben for the championship.
