Put another way, what movie series had the largest gap in quality from the original to one (or more) of it's sequels?
(*) I do not consider Star Trek 2 a sequel to Star Trek: The Motion Picture. For the purposes of this poll, Star Trek 2 was the first movie in the series of further Star Trek movies with the original cast, and Star Trek (2009) was the first movie in the reboot series.

Re: What is the BEST movie with the WORST sequel?
There are a lot of great movies here. A lot of them had really bad sequels. But after thinking about it, and I'm not saying this because of Pinback, but I had to go with Jaws. I really wanted to go with Star Wars because those prequels were pretty bad, but even the worst Star Wars (or Matrix, my second pick) movie is leagues better than Jaws 4. I can't think of a wider gap in quality. Even Indiana Jones 4 had some redeeming qualities.

If you go by Rotten Tomatoes rankings, Jaws is clearly the right answer (Jaws 98% - Jaws 4 0%).

What about direct-to-video sequels, can we count those?

Since everything is direct-to-video anymore, sure!
