Well I just now read the Wiki article on this, having never, ever paid any attention to it before. It's pretty sloppy police work at the house, but they thought it wad a kidnapping at first. The ransom note was written in the house, with a first draft, on their own stationery? That sounds like a cover up. Since little sister was getting all the attention, big brother got mad and gave her what-for and the parents thought she was dead.
