Hello, I'm Leslie Rouse
Hry tahr, ny mraub is Lehsuie RRRhiuse.
[Tdarcos Interrupts]
Sorry, Leslie has a speech impediment. He will explain below.
The above line should read, "Hi, I'm Leslie Rouse." Just remember, any time he would speak, it would be very difficult to understand him. I do, mostly, but I have two years of practice listening to him, asking him to repeat, and sometimes even ask him to spell words I still don't get.
[Leslie Rouse returns]
I am a man, despite the thought some people have that this is a woman's name. I'm 61 years old.
I was a navy corpsman for 12 years, and a paramedic for over twenty.
One of my hobbies was professional shooting. I was also a firearms instructor. I was practicing on the range with a handgun. I don't really know exactly what happened, but I think it was a misfire. I must have proceeded to see why and the round exploded into the right side of my face. My mouth has been damaged and stays partially open. I have a severe speech impediment, memory loss, and a near-constant drool. I keep a rolled up sheet of hand towel in my mouth most of the time. I will shortly be going back to the hospital for my seventh surgery.
My bed is next to his, about 15' away, and there is a curtain between us, it sits behind his computer.
When Paul and I met, we hit it off instantly, and had an immediate rapport. Paul has told me that on the first day I was here we spoke more to each other than all three of his prior roommates, and that was over several months.
The signature at the bottom indicates my favorite comment, anytime Paul says something which can be interpreted as an innuendo. I'll probably do that here.
If you have questions, feel free to ask. If Paul doesn't know, he'll ask me and report it.
I would like to thank the moderator for inviting me to come on here, and Paul suggested I introduce myself. He mentioned it's only about 8 people who read everything here, so it's not like I'm exposing my personal details to 20 million people. But I'm not scared of anything, so if you want to know something about me, go ahead.
I met Paul's other friend, Flack, when he came by. Paul said it was around July 4.
Breakfast should be coming soon.[Paul's note: that was at 10:30; breakfast just came now (10:45)] Actually, it's about 30 minutes late. In the meantime, I'm calling my wife at home to tell her how much I love her. Then I'll go back to watching TV.
So, I guess it's so long. Oh wait, that's what she said! (Yes, I know I can be irritating sometimes. But it's still good.)

Leslie, it's truly great to have you here.
You've led an exciting and varied life. What advice would you give this group of whipper snappers? Any words to live by?

Well, how old are these 'whipper snappers' ? *Paul had to tell me,that means 'younger people.') Are they in their 50s, 40s, what.? I don't want to insult anybody.Ice Cream Jonsey wrote: Sun Jan 08, 2023 9:35 pm Leslie, it's truly great to have you here.

Paul estimates probably none of you were born before 1980. If any of you are offended, blame him, not me!

Sure if you like electric guitars! It’s just a picture to represent you. I chose the ghost looking thing because I’m into paranormal stuff. I’m also into guitars though!

Cool to have you here btw Leslie.
I don’t have any military experience but do enjoy going to the gun range to shoot my antique German guns and my buddies Sig 45 pistol. What is your favorite type and brand of gun?
Also, your accident could happen to anyone. Hell, my dad has made me nervous a few times clearing jams for people. What advice would you give me or anyone else who is investigating a misfire or jam?

That's a good one. Let me think about thar. Probably a Remington - shotgun, handgun, any of them.Jizaboz wrote: Tue Jan 10, 2023 7:53 pm Cool to have you here btw Leslie.

Hmmm, let's see. Always believe the gun you're working on is loaded. Always point the gun in a safe direction. I'm trying to make the suggestions generic. What has to be done to clear it depends on the type of weapon. You might not know this, but your weapon has an instruction and care manual. If you can, read it, preferably before you take the gun shooting. They're probably called owner's manual, safety and instruction manual, or use & care manual. If you don't have it google (manufacturers name or brand name) gun manuals. So you can even read them on your phone.Jizaboz wrote: Tue Jan 10, 2023 7:53 pm Also, your accident could happen to anyone. My best rule is: Isolate, locate, and remediate.
Isolate: get the weapon where it can't fire at, or injure, anyone else, and hopefully not yourself, either.
Locate: determine where the problem shell or cartridge is, and if ejected, where it's going to go or if you remove it, and if that location is where a round can leave the gun other than by you removing it with you fingers, make sure any body parts you want to keep intact are not there. For example, if you have to pull a shotgun shell out of the breech, that's okay; if you have to get something stuck in the barrel, don't look in from the business end, look from the breech out.
Remediate: If it's a squib (bullet with enough force to leave the breech. but not enough to clear the barrel), or appears to be a dud (round that apparently did not fire) you might want to wait 30 seconds before retrieving it, it might be slow burning and go off late. Always use a push rod to push a round stuck in the barrel. If it's still stuck, set the gun aside and take it to a gunsmith. And make sure the gun is 'safe' before opening the breech. Cycle the weapon if necessary (and can be done) to be sure there is no round waiting to be fired. Remove any magazine, possibly open the floorplate on the bottom of a rifle. Know how your weapon reacts, especially for cheap, older, or foreign made rifles. Usually you remove the magazine, then cycle it to clear any rounds, but be careful; at least one rifle requires you to cycle, then remove the magazine, then cycle again. If you remove the magazine, it will fire the round in the breech.
That's all I can think of right now.

Hey thanks, that all makes sense!
I've actually been considering getting a Remington as my first shotgun; good to know I'm on the right track.

Paul thinks none of us were born before '80? I was born in 1974, ICJ seems similar age, Vark is older than most of us.Leslie Rouse wrote: Mon Jan 09, 2023 4:28 am Paul estimates probably none of you were born before 1980. If any of you are offended, blame him, not me!
Love to hear about any favorite gun stories you have. One of my favorite gun experiences was at a Libertarian Party retreat in Upstate NY. Spent a glorious afternoon with rich libertarians smoking pot and drinking whisky while shooting handguns. My favorite was I believe a 45 semi auto with a laser sight. Not the kind of laser sight that projects a dot on the target, rather one that projecs a laser inside the sight that you can only see when dead on. So much fun.

I recommend the Remington 1100. Excellent shotgun. They stand behind their work.Jizaboz wrote: Thu Jan 12, 2023 6:06 pm Hey thanks, that all makes sense!

Ah hell yeah. I'm interested in skeet shooting and this looks like a great gun to get into that with.Leslie Rouse wrote: Fri Jan 13, 2023 9:29 am I recommend the Remington 1100. Excellent shotgun. They stand behind their work.
Yeah.. it is of my strong opinion that alcohol and firearms should never be mixed. I'd rather drink afterwards to calm my nerves anyway.Wow. Just wow.

Well, actually, there is one case where they are. I'm not sure how it is done, but my understanding is that the 'proof' in alcohol was determined by some sort of combining or mixing alcohol and gunpowder, then 'flashing' it. By the way the mix burned you could determine what the 'proof' is. But then again, using cartridges is probably more expensive than using a bag of gunpowder, and is probably a waste of perfectly good ammo.Jizaboz wrote: Fri Jan 13, 2023 8:41 pmAh hell yeah. Speaking of acquiring 'Dutch courage,' did you hear the joke about the guy who would go to a bar and have a couple of stiff drinks first in order to raise the courage to go to an AA meeting?

Jiz, if you are interested in learning more about gun safety, there is an excellent article on TV Tropes. Usual disclaimers apply, e.g. it's not a safety course, they're inexpensive, don't get all your gun safety advice from a website, etc. I found it very interesting and informative.Jizaboz wrote: Tue Jan 10, 2023 7:53 pm What advice would you give me or anyone else who is investigating a misfire or jam?

Ok in the worst of times I did that. Except instead of a bar it was a 7-11.Tdarcos wrote: Sun Jan 15, 2023 9:50 am Speaking of acquiring 'Dutch courage,' did you hear the joke about the guy who would go to a bar and have a couple of stiff drinks first in order to raise the courage to go to an AA meeting?

It's come to the point where I think every new poster is just someone else doing a bit.
Odyssia69 was just Fatsternis, Leslie is just another Tdarcos character and Blue is just CO.
Its that whole online wariness thing...

The cimmwnts of aLeslie are his, and nor mine. I do type them in for him, but the words are his unless I say I added something. I read questions you guys ask him or comments you guys make and then post what he said. It is not an alter ego of me.

Leslie, what is your taste in music?
I get the vibe you are "anything but x and sometimes y" sort of man.
