Just because some people misunderstand the song does not necessarily make it what they have mistaken it for. Like The Police's Every Breath You Take is often played at weddings, ignoring that the song is not about love, but a stalker's obsession.
As I noted earlier, take the song as written and you get a story about an imaginary creature told from the viewpoint of the creature, as if it were real. That's all.
