Zero Wing (TurboDuo, 1992)

(Played on an Analogue Duo.)

Zero Wing was the game that changed my understanding of the Internet. Well, not this exact game - this is the TurboDuo version, which does not have the cinematic intro that spawned the "All Your Base Are Belong To Us" meme. I didn't know what a meme was, I just remember thinking that a piece of .. of ... I couldn't explain it, I needed the word. I remember posting on Walrustitty's bulletin board about it, exposed to the material.

The meme came from the Sega MegaDrive version, not this one. So how is the TurboDuo version?

It's very difficult! This is a 2D side-scroller shooter and you'd better be ready to analyze what is on the screen. You can move anywhere, but enemies rain down upon you. You can go backwards, but you seem to go slower that way, and the enemies are happy to ram into you at first. There is another blimp-like object that, if you destroy it, gives you a power up that makes the first level much more manageable. But man, I think it took me a dozen times to get going with it.

I was aware that the TurboDuo had some nice side scroller shooters, Zero Wing is very pleasant in my limited experience with it tonight. I did not get far enough to complete a stage and this is early 1990s gaming so there's no partial saves or save anywhere with this.

I've been scene setting thanks to the Analogue Duo. This is enjoyable to me - finding the best games for a system, getting them to run, evaluating them for a bit.

Jailbreak out!

I have Splatterhouse, which is a HuCard going for hundreds of dollars in physical media, working via a .pce file.

Yes!
