Re: Great Moments in Computer Programming

It is 9:30 at night. I am exhausted. I am trying to send something to someone on Amazon. Their "add new address" function is broken.

I think maybe it will work on Firefox. I know what is going to happen.

Try to login. Username and password correct.

"We sent a 6 digit code to your phone..."

My phone is upstairs. Charging. I am *exhausted*. I guess I have to fucking go upstairs and get it.

Remember when could just login to websites? I remember.

Those were the days.

lol yeah I hate how they want to initially send the auth to my Google Tab which I am rarely at, 2nd option is phone.

UPDATE:

Wired up fans, installed ram, all power connectors.. fired it up aaaand nothing but solid red light. Because I expect failure and have had 7 beers, I calmly pulled one of the 32 gig (?!) ram sticks out and it fired right up to the bios, properly displaying everything. HAHAHAHA!!! Next up is BIOS update. I see my factory BIOS is from May and an update should clear up at least some of the RAM incompatibility and Intel chip voltage bullshit.

Motherboard hardware didn’t want to match newest bios update. Apparently it thinks the Intel drivers from May are Ok. I’ll check on it later. Instead rebooting again after installing 2nd stick and waiting an extra 15 seconds the system to recognize my shit and bring it online for a total of 64 GB sys RAM of the fastest type. Holy shit!

Is it me or are computers getting harder to deal with. There was a time, after the little jumpers on the mobos went away, when you could just stuff any old component in the box and it would go. Right around the XP era, I believe.

Not just you at all, man. I recall the era you speak of well and it was like that for a while! It wasn’t always perfect but usually if you bought a part it just worked.

My last setup I went thru 3 motherboards (via returns to NeeEgg) before I gave up on a used Intel chip that was working just fine in the original host before giving up and buying a new CPU and 4th motherboard. Before that I had the one with the weird bios issue that wouldn’t raise the RPMs of the fans with heat. This one there are also mad warnings and gotchas but at least all of my hardware works the first time! No returns!

Bios update done! I was working on it til about 5 am last night and in my sleepy state couldn’t figure out why the bios update file would not validate.

Today after dnd I realized.. because I had downloaded files for revision 1.x not 1.0 :/ OK sure wtf ever. 1.0 file from August 14th installed fine and includes all the microcode patch horseshit.

Installed the internal SSD. Now to install Windows 11 for the first time!

I have a suspicion you did something, at some point, to request that it require 2FA. I have been using Amazon for years, and it's rare that i'm even asked for a password, or even login, even when I sent something to someone else at a different address, like the not one, but two hard drives I sent to Flack. Unless I do something like change some account settings, I might get asked for my password, and even that is rare.

Looking and playing fucking awesome..

.. except even after bios update got some cpu cores running at 100c when playing Cyberpunk 2077 on ultra.

No panic! Took a bit of research but found a good guide specific to my mobo to regulate the voltages and cool this bitch down. Like, it became more complicated than I was even initially aware of heh. I’ll fuck with that tomorrow. Happy with how things are going so far but man do I feel sorry for the people that just hooked up this CPU without HW monitors and just played COD on ultra without checking shit lol

I’ve learned a bit with this build really I’ll go into more detail later on as far as changes from my build 10 years ago. One thing is for sure though; plug and play (pray?) ain’t a thing anymore with these new Intel chips.

Yeah, I think a lot of places are just defaulting to asking for it by now. Which sucks. I don't want to have my phone on me at all times. I want to be able to leave it upstairs charging for a few hours. That should be possible, but then if you try to login anywhere new on the internet, these places DEMAND and opt you into the worthless 2FA stuff.

2FA has never, ever helped me or prevented a problem.

When I was moving pictures for my friend yesterday, it ( Google) sent a code to her email, which was accessed with the same phone that I was using for moving photos, which really does nothing for security. I just had to open another app on the phone and hit OK and copy a number to the other app. Pointless.

I hope all the voltage issues are worked out before I buy another motherboard/processor. All I could do is load fail safe defaults in my bios and reboot. Messing with those settings sounds dangerous

Oh yeah, whats the freaking deal with a Windows 10 laptop that it has to have an internet connection to log on at startup?

Hm.. what most likely happened is that the laptop was setup using a Microsoft account as also the user/password.

However, once you login with that you can just create a new Admin user if you want to with no needed connection to M$

I talked to my dad some on the phone today and he asked me if I was happy with it and after a short pause I replied "Yeah! Actually I am really impressed with it. Just got a uhh settings issue or two to work out." which is honestly how I feel. I'm taking my time with it as I'm kind of forced to. After leaving work at the park at 5:30 I had to go straight back to work for my contract job and start dinner. So, maybe tomorrow? The more I delay the more videos are released and maybe Gigabyte will be releasing a new bios update again soon.

However..

- It's well within spec when doing everything else so far except wide-ass-open Cyberpunk
- I did read a post where a dude with a rather large Steam library was talking about how NONE of the other games in his library showed this behavior! He went back into CP2077 and simply limited his framerate to 90 and it instantly cooled down. Interesting..

This would make an interesting thread.

I did have someone hack into my MS work account. The only thing that kept them out was 2FA. I got the notification via Authenticator that someone was trying to log in, around 2:30am. Hopped right on and changed my password. Fuckers.

Ha! Fuck the Intel hate. Perhaps people scared to tinker with BIOS settings after updating it? I changed like 4 settings and am getting much cooler temps with no change to anything else I can notice so far.

This new setup is fucking stupid fast to the point of I literally can't even use a lot of the resources. If I was still into eh.. old habits without permission this box would be a hackers wet dream 20 years ago. I will try to use it for good! (but probably a bit of black magic along the way heh-heh)

Though fairly sure once I get back into Unreal5 development I'm going to be glad I have all of that.

Edit: Yes, I named the I7 14th Gen Windows 11 based computer "Voltron" lol. I hope it lasts another 10 years.

I will talk about what a mess it is getting Github going on a new work computer later today.

It's the closest thing I've ever seen to "just don't let them in, in the name of security."

No, we're not scared. We use it to overclock and get even better performance. It's just that with the current Intel chips, you have to do the opposite of that, or else your chip might die a few months down the line...

Intel used to make CPUs that simply refused to die. I was running a 2500K for like 10 years, overclocked from 3.3GHz to 4.3GHz. Try that with the current Intel chips and see what happens.

Trying to use 1Password on a corporate-managed computer, a new one, because the screen died on my first work Macbook.

1Password won't just let you sign in with Okta. That's not enough. It wants you to fucking SIGN IN WITH THE OLD COMPUTER.

I am so sick of this dumb shit. Why is every stupid person in the world working in 2FA?

The screen doesn't work on the old computer. I have to disconnect my setup and hook it to a monitor. For what? What is the goddamn point of Okta?
