Switched cell service (Kind of)

Post by Jizaboz »

Around 5 years ago, I got what at the time was the best pre-paid wireless deal you could get. 35$ a month for unlimited talk and text and 10GB of data which at the time was a lot considering my lifestyle.. being home or at the beach with a wired connection and wireless router 90% of the time. Total Freedom Wireless it was called at the time. A "Walmart plan" which always piggy-backed on the Verizon network that was later bought out by Verizon. It is now known as "Total Wireless by Verizon" because fuck freedom I guess?

Since then I have canceled Spectrum at both places due to 50$ a month T-Mobile internet service, which is actually faster than what I was getting for years from those Roadrunner/Time-Warner/Spectrum assholes at least a huge majority of the time. I can carry the T-Mobile device with me to Salty Shores when I have my girlfriend tag along but it's nagged me a bit that when I go by myself I have to plan in advance. Basically load some old shows I want to watch into the laptop and prep a few other things so that I barely use the Internet; keeping enough monthly data available for Slack and such.

Then, 2 days ago I see an advertisement for "Visible" mobile service from Verizon. The same fucking company, same network, yet this plan is for unlimited talk/text AND unlimited data for 25$. I am now on Visible by Verizon. Their iPhone app for testing a trial run and transfer of my number was easy aside from having to find my actual old account number which for some reason was the "device number" in Total Wireless rather than being displayed as an actual account #.

I can now stream TV at work! HaHa glorious!

My phone has gotten out of control. I am constantly getting crapped on by utilities that raise their rates 45 cents a month or whatever and then next thing you know, it's 10 bucks more. I think Verizon is supposed to be $85 a month for me and it is up to $91 now. There is no way I use as much as I am paying for. This sucks. I think I had it down to like $65 at one point with a lower data plan.

!! Yeah man if you are already on the Verizon network anyway you might want to look into Visible.

Did they say why they couldn't move your number back to what it was?

I never called customer service because I didn't want to get pissed off. I used the website/app to initiate the transfer and everything looked right as of the original posting. I didn't realize until the next day that the number had changed by one digit.

My guess would be whomever had to manually type it in fucked it up as there were sooo many 9s in my original number.

It's not like I have a huge contact list. I don't even have many family left I talk to, so texting everyone my new number wasn't a bother.

I'm thinking about switching to Visible, currently on Verizon. Ever since they did away with the Senior Plan the monthly rates are ridiculous. The boy has used Visible for a year now with no complaints and its only $40. a month, more or less.

Details later...

I've been jumping among third party providers since the days of Cricket with StraightTalk, Republic Wireless, and a couple others to hone in on the "cheapest rate" feasible. (And then there was this weird one where you'd listen to ads / messages on the phone for free text, data, and talk. EXCEPT! They launched before figuring that piece out... So you ended up as a Customer with quite literally free service.

That is an aside: the cheapest legit service is Mint Mobile (dare I plug them) with the caveat that you've to pay for 12 months / a year in advance. Introductory plan is for $15 a month with all the data you can eat, and then switches to $45ish a month where you pay $350 or so for the year with cheaper products there as well. Mint Mobile is still evil, just their Blood Pact is the best terms of the bunch.

I call bullshit. Visible uses Verizon's towers. I would press them on why your phones are not compatible.

You type in your phone's IMEI number and it comes back with a "Sorry Chally" message. But they will give you a deal on a new phone!
Oh well

Pull the SIM card from your son's phone and put it in yours. My money says it works.

I also have 5$ on that bet.

However, if we are both mistaken you should just check their compatibility list. There’s no way you can’t get a good droid for like 40$ on such list.

I’m on “unlocked” iPhone standard 2nd edition but my shit is many years old.

I'm not interested in upgrading phones right now. If the process had been to just swap out sim cards and jump thru some website hoops then ok, I'd do it. We both have LG phones which have been discontinued.
