This book is organized into three main sections. The first deals with the two largest competitions in the interactive fiction community. The biggest is the Interactive Fiction Competition (or IFComp), one of the longest-running videogame-making competitions in the world and a prolific producer of high-quality interactive fiction. The second-largest is the Spring Thing, a more relaxed and small competition meant to serve as a counterpoint to the IFComp. This section also contains a brief description of the period leading up to the establishment of the IFComp.

The second main section deals with winners of the XYZZY Best Game Award, the highest honor bestowed by the interactive fiction community. I analyze these one by one. The final section is a collection of assorted essays on the development and evaluation of games.
