Playstation 3

Post by Ice Cream Jonsey »

I broke down and got one off eBay. I checked the model number to ensure I could eventually mod it. It was $80 shipped, what the hell is the point of anything if I can't make a rational, calm decision like that not fueled by rampant consumerism. They are only going to get more expensive when they become nostalgic for people younger than myself, so I struck while I could.

I think I just had one game around for it, the Silent Hill 2 and 3 pack, which I will try out. Looking at PS3 exclusives, there aren't many. There is "Puppeteer" which sounds unique. There is something called "Killzone 2" which I guess is an exclusive, though it doesn't seem to be my thing. I think it's most famous for The Last of Us, but I bought that via my PS4. I do not like games like Uncharted, so those are out. There are some others that are oddly expensive like Lollipop Chainsaw.

I suspect I got a really cheap fake PS3 gamepad. Which is fine - the package was priced correctly, I am not complaining! It seems like it weighs an ounce. I don't know if it is wireless or not, if not I guess I'll use an extension cord.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas seems to work on Steam, and there is a bunch of discussion regarding what "version" to get for the PS3. So I'm out on that one.

I wonder. Is there a PS3 store that still works?

At one point I had three of them. My no3y got me one for Christmas just after the ps4 came out. A few months later he gave me his because he wasn't using it any more and a year later my friend gave me a first-release model that could play ps2 games. As a negative bonus that one had a hard drive filled with inter-racial pr0n, which I quickly formatted.

The interface could be better. I only play Mafia 2 and L.A. Noir on mine, even though I have ten games for it

I am not really mad because this thing is old and the PS4 experience is fine.

To buy a digital PS3 game, you have to not have any payment methods attached to your Playstation account. You have to then load your account with Playstation credit.

You can't use the app to buy credit. You need to use a gift card.

I was rejected three times trying to buy a gift card for credit. Once with PayPal, twice with Mastercard. Why?

I went to Amazon to buy a card, hoping the Playstation web site would let me redeem it. Amazon wanted me to enter my entire card number again. Ya know. For the card they have saved. Never saw that before.

If it's THIS FUCKING BAD then just stop offering gift cards. Fuck. I don't doubt there is fraud. It's also just free money for them.

I did finally get the code. I redeemed it. Sony charges tax, of course, so it will never even up, I bought a $25 card for what will be a $16.10 game.

Odds are that the purchase works? Low!

Good question! This assumes that the PS3 that I was logged into was able to check the status of how much credit I had when I went to pay. Of course it does that, right?

Absolutely fucking not.

Because I know how computers work, I logged out of the Playstation store on the PS3 and went back in. I am letting go of the fact that you can't just exit, you have to back your way out of every screen before the payment screen INCLUDING the deletion of every single character you entered to find a game. I am not making that up. Luckily, I picked a game with a 4 letter title.

This is what it looks like trying to back out of the store. What kind of UI is this?

Image

I went back in and this time it saw the funds. Went to pay and....

This part I expected. It wanted me to enter information about a "Venmo Credit Card." I would like to remind everyone that Venmo does not work that way. I remembered that I had to delete any cards in my account, so I did that on the Playstation web site (not the PS3, not the Playstation app, mind you) and then exited the Playstation store on the PS3, went back in and was finally able to purchase "Rain", which my research indicated was a Playstation 3 exclusive and a quirky little adventure game.

Gabe Newell said that piracy was really a service problem. He could have been talking about the Playstation 3 in 2025. It took me at least an hour to buy a game on it, and yes, I am thankful you can do it at all. I have read that Sony didn't want to spend the money to fix the PS3 store. I said this elsewhere, but I know 10 brilliant people, at least, looking for work and all of whom have experience in the field of payments. This could be fixed if they wanted it to be fixed. I can accept that they may never make enough money for Playstation 3s to hire a team, but also, it's Sony, and this experience was enough to have me pivot to looking at modding the console - hopefully a softmod, but whatever - and getting all the games from here.

Rain gave me Ico vibes.

One last observation. The PS3 is frustrating in how it needs to be told 2 or 3 times to do something. Downloading a game requires two confirmations. Buying a game required like 6 confirmations.

I tried to turn it off with a long press of the PS button and it asked "Are you sure??????" Yes, console. I will never accidentally try to power you off. I confirmed and left the room the PS3 was in to post here and when I came back out it was still on. I tried to just long press the power button and it turned off and started up again. I almost just yanked the power cord.

I'm glad to know this! This is what emulation can't get you. This has made me a more learned gamer. The PS3 has probably the most dogshit UI/UX of any console. Who knew? Well, millions of you. But now I know it too.

The hardware itself is sleek and stylish. I like looking at it.

I can understand why everyone was so eager to mod the PS3 and install custom firmware

SEAN?!

I joke about it, but I did enjoy Heavy Rain for the most part. Back when I didn't have a PS3 I felt like it was one of the only games I was missing out on. When the Detroit game came out I didn't have a PS4 yet but got it shortly after getting PS4 and enjoyed that game too.

Do not care for it.
Years ago I bought a 55" Sony flatscreen television and it had the exact same interface as the PS3.

Turrrrrrrible.
