Wait, don't answer that. I know what happened. You're probably on .61. I am using ROMs from .56 and I think MAME32 from around the same rev.
I FUCKING HATE this about the MAME project. This much renaming of ROMs is really, really unecessary. The biggest problem with the whole scene is in trying to get the ROMs because there's so many goddamn repeat customers. Really, the best thing to do is acquire all the ROMs for a given release and then "freeze" your updating of MAME. Either that, or meticulously scan the Usenet groups for them and spend most of your on-line life downloading them.
Galaga 88 changed... GALAGA FREAKING 88. Ridiculous.
If you can't access that page that Worm detailed (which does have the latest rev -- I was getting timeouts when I tried to use it) then I'll get things set, again, when I get home. But this is why MAME is such a failure to introduce people to. It shouldn't be anywhere near this much of a pain in the ass.

Ahhh, I realize what was happening with Galaga 88.
There is a "base" set of ROMs that goes with the various other sub-versions of it. If you don't have that base version you're out of luck.
ANYWAY...
Try this, Ben:

Can't a brother get a little peace? It's war on the streets, and the war in the Middle East. Instead of war on poverty, they got a war on drugs so the police can bother me!

Yes... YES!! It does work!!! It works for me. And I did a fresh install of Mame .61 and only have Galaga 88 ROMs in my directory.
Ok. OK. Okay.
Do this:
1) Download this:
http://www.joltcountry.com/downloads/Ma ... porium.zip
That has EVERY SINGLE ROM that starts with "gala".
2) Unzip that and put it in your \Roms directory, off your MAME32 .61 directory.
3) Do not unzip the individual files
4) Start up MAME32 and have it refresh the available games.
5) Play Galaga 88, set one.
6) Report back with your findings.

No, no, none of that crap works.
For anyone who actually wants to PLAY Galaga 88 rather than downloading lots of ZIP files which don't work, you can get it here:

Actually, fuck that.
There's NO DAMN WAY that zipped archive shouldn't have worked. Not if you're running MAME .61. Can someone do me a favor so I know that I am not a collosal fuckup? Anyone? Anyone who downloads MAME32 version .61 and that long-arsed filename I had up above with the Galaga shit in it and reports their findings back to me gets a NO PRIZE!!!
