Q? About Necrotic Drift layout.

Post by Merk »

Under the graphics area in Necrotic Drift, there is a bar with options for File, Text, Music, Goodies. At first glance, it looks like a menu bar meant for clicking. Clicking, though, kind of does the equavalent of a Hugo right-click (options, etc) -- sometimes. Are the options supposed to be click-able?

Maybe I'm overthinking it. Since left-click doesn't normally bring up Hugo options, and the options list contains pretty much those four categories, it's probably doing what it's supposed to. :) I'm just looking at other examples of graphical Hugo IF tonight, to get inspired. :)

Yeah, I couldn't figure out a way to get them to behave like the PC (and maybe other) versions of Magnetic Scrolls games. I would have loved them to be drop down menus, but as it stands it's just a way to sort of direct new players. So if you right click on any of them you should get the menu options for all of them.

Now that I think about it, if you right click anywhere on the screen you might get the same thing. Hmm. I don't have a copy of ND here, but I'm going to guess that's the case.

But yeah, basically having them there primarily makes the game look retro and secondly puts a newbie in the right spot to get access to some commands they otherwise might not be aware of.

A questionable design decision at best. I found it more confusing than helpful.

I liked it, but I was aware of the whole conflict back when it was being figured out so I might be biased.

Right-clicking anywhere works -- it seems to be a function of Hugo. But somehow, your menu also works if you just left-click it, which I thought was cool. I don't know if you did that on purpose, but it doesn't seem to work when you left-click in other games, so I thought maybe you did.

I've been working on a graphical layout for my new game, and I know what you mean about the windows. The problem with doing a drop-down as such is, the text window becomes the lower portion of the screen starting at the bottom of the lowest window. So it's not really practical. But it keeps the games portable, I think.

It was a horrible, horrible decision, and likely accounted for the game's poor sales.

Geez, you're going to hate "Fallacy of Dawn- Special Edition" when it comes out in fifteen years.
