You should be able to drop anything that the crane is holding on to.
If you can't - go to an earlier save point and retry. The game is not bugfree (though there are lots of patches) but you can get through the whole thing with the original unpatched release.
You probably need to have the buggy upright, on its tires - zap it with the gravity gun if it's on its side or upside down.
