Album Review
I am here to review the album "Toxicity" by System of a Down.
I like it. I like it a lot. It reminds me of Static X and the like, except slightly more musically complex, and with a really great singer, who makes it all work.
Now, enough of that. The first time I heard this dude sing, all I could think was, "Hey, this guy, when he's not yelling and screaming, sounds a hell of a lot like Tom Lehrer!!"
I've opined this to several friends, and they all look at me in that way that I've grown so accustomed -- a look of mild bemusement, mixed with bewilderment and a splash of fear. But I maintain that when he's mellowing out, the singer for SoaD sounds like Tom Lehrer.
I would really like somebody to agree with me before I departed the earthly plain. On anything, really, but especially this topic.
Anyone?

I am pre-disposed to hate them. I don't know why. They just grate on my nerves, even though I cannot recall a single song of theirs off the top of my head.
I will give them more than I give most bands, however. I will give them... a chance. Ben, please name one song of theirs. I will then go download it and listen to it. I will judge them completely off that one song. In fact, I will judge them forever off that one song, so please choose well.

Well, the one that got me hooked was the song "Toxicity", which is off of the album called "Toxicity".
That also has the benefit of having parts which sound like Tom Lehrer, so you can pay some mind to the original purpose of this thread.
Interestingly, I was also predisposed to not liking them, though I couldn't name one of their songs. Then I heard "Toxicity" on the radio, and was like, "Hey, this band (whoever they are) is pretty good!" So I went home and looked it up, and, horror of horrors, it was that band I'd always thought I didn't like.
Maybe I was thinking of somebody else.

Yeah, maybe me too. The name of their group is very, very lame. Maybe if it had come out 20 years ago it would have been all right, but it is just one of those band names that you cringe when you have to say it aloud:
"Hey, so, what's in the CD player, what are we listening to?"
"System of a Down."
"What?"
"They are called 'System of a Down.'"
"Ah."
"I didn't fucking name them."

The last was Beaver, that came out with their first tape in 1993. Now, whether or not the band sucked is completely up for debate.Ben wrote:I'm trying to think of bands that have come out within the last 10 years or so that didn't have really horrible names.
"Tool" is about all I can come up with, and that's borderline.
Seriously. Name a recent band name that does not suck. Doesn't exist.

I downloaded and burned the entire SoaD "Toxicity" CD a couple weeks ago. Outside of the 3 or 4 songs that I already knew... I was really NOT a fan of this CD. I really tried to give it a chance... I WANTED to like it... I just couldn't do it.
Chop Suey... Toxicity... Aerials... and Spiders (from the first album)... all very good. Just dont a fan of the rest.
