Another Wikipedia Speech!

Post by Ice Cream Jonsey »

If you hate the Wikipedia as much as I do, Jason Scott (the BBS Documentary guy) had an all-new speech that he delivered in England recently. It's currently the first entry on his site:

http://ascii.textfiles.com/

But you can download it from here.

I haven't heard it yet. I'm probably burning it to a CD and making it my commuting audio tomorrow. Actually, I wish that every day I could turn on the radio and listen to someone bash Wikipedia. A radio station that did such a thing, for instance. You'd totally have trouble getting MP3s of it archived daily because every single anal-retentive, Asperger Syndrome person in the world is a strong contributor towards okay, I think you get the idea.

At any rate.

They might as well call it Rumor-pedia or Urbanlegend-pedia

It's useful for bare bones stuff but I wouldn't use it as a source for a research paper or anything.

I heard it on the internet so it must be true. Now forward this to ten of your friends and you will have good luck for one hour....

Wikipedia is useful for finding sources. I will often use Wikipedia in research papers if hte statement they are referring to is sited lower down in the article. Similarly, the "citation needed" tag is a pretty good hint that what the guy just said is a load of bunk and to not believe it.
