Give me your favorite 2600 games

Post by Ice Cream Jonsey »

Okay, they released "Stella" for the GP2X handheld game machine. Stella is an Atari 2600 emulator.

I grabbed the following games for it: (I think I have all the 2600 ROMs somewhere, but I was pulling them off Romnation.net one at a time)

Spider Fighter (it was on my top 100 list)

Haunted House (I always wanted that game and I still think it has some of the best box art ever)

Bowling (The Milker's recently deceased father used to play the hell out of it, and this came up in conversation, so I grabbed it)

Wizard of Wor (I learned a lot about the limits of the 2600 when Bruce told me how he made his Lord of the Rings game. For instance, the enemies in this game spend a lot of time on the same horizontal plane...)

Warlords (My favorite 2600 game. And in 1 player mode only two of the computer paddles seem to be able to move at once. The third guy is a dead fish.)

So lay it on me and I'll put them on the GP2X.

Dodge'em. Like Pong in some weird LSD mode.

Missle Command. On really slow mode you can play for ten hours straight. Well, you have to let your friend take over when you go to the bathroom.

Oh yeah. There are no trackballs on any of the handhelds, so the Atari version would seem to be ideal for this.

Excellent. River Raid can now officially be added! And they weren't kidding with "Enduro." I always liked the sequel, "Slog." Or was it called "Tedium"? Who can tell, who can tell.

And as for the last game, I think Ben means "Deadly Discs of Tron." You were definitely that guy in that one!

I would love to win Pitfall. Here is a Pitfall question - do you start off going right or left to win it? I'll try to take it from there.

If a list of 100 games has taken two years, how long will a list of 2600 games take?

What was the name of that kid who looked like Lenny Goobner? The one we used to play this game with that one summer?

Pitfall! fucking sucks. All the Activision games did, except for Kaboom (I'm not putting those stupid exclamation marks there any longer FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE) and Spider Fighter.

Pitfall is one ticky-tack call after another and the same shit on 200 different screens. I'm playing it now with save states. There is absolutely zero interesting things to be seen in Pitfall after the first four minutes of play through.

I agree with ICJ. I never saw what the big deal was. "Bip!" There, that's Pitfall.

People ask me to describe Pitfall all the time. Know what I tell 'em?

Seriously. It's like there are six combos for crap on the screen and Crane cycles through them 200 times. You've seen it all in the first four minutes.

Then again, I don't think I like any of his games. Let's look it up.

Outlaw: No.
Freeway: Fuck, no.
Pitfall: No.
Pitfall II: Ha, no.
Ghostbusters: Never played it. Heard it was good on the C64. But the same people also like Pitfall (meaning, everyone).
Little Computer People: Ah, sheet, this is brilliant.
A Boy and His Blob: Fuck, brilliant, sorry.
Night Trap: Haha, is this Wiki vandalism? I don't remember this.
A Boy And His Blob II: The Blobbening: Or whatever it's called.

Seriously, why don't you go play E FUCKIN' T ?

Or PAC FUCKIN' MAN NO NOT MS. PAC MAN WHICH DIDN'T SUCK ASS ?

Or, sweet Jesus SLOT MACHINE--all the excitement of a SLOT MACHINE only without actual nickels. Oh. Fuck. Slot Machine is actually a David Crane game. Fuck.

Anyway, if you don't like Crane, how about the Warshaw games? Yar's Revenge is as close to Star Castle as you'll get on the 2600. I think Indiana Jones is a fine adventure game. And then YOU CAN FUCKIN' PLAY E.T. BECAUSE YOU DESERVE TO SUFFER YOU PITFALL! HATIN' COCKKNOCKER.

Yar's Revenger and Raiders of the Lost Ark are both great games. Raiders is probably the real best 2600 game because of all the crazy shit going on in it. Man that thing was a blast. There was actual mystery in it. Anything could happen at any time. There really isn't a counterpart for it these days.

I do remember not reading the "hints" section of the manual for the longest time. Then I finally did because my cousin came over to play it. The stuff in the manual is utterly necessary to get anywhere.

I don't want to be dead to anyone.

THEN LEARN TO LOVE PITFALL!!

It's not as if jumping over cobras isn't good practice for LIFE IN YOUR SNAKE-INFESTED APARTMENT. Maybe Vitriola could branch out into other sorts of herp rescue and SWINGING ON VINES OVER ALLIGATORS could also be regarded as training for your domestic existence.
