An ACK COmmercial Game... Possible?

Post by Nihil Vulture »

LO! I am thinking of doing a Commercial game with ACK 2.0, is that viable? I know Mr. Chris Hopkins released it to the public for free... But is it possible I can do this? I will only distribute the Game Folder, not the Engine of course (that I hope, will be enough to be out of the woods)...

Happy Adventuring

Hmm, good question. There doesn't seem to be anything specific concerning that in the docs that come with ACK, which puts that in a grey area. Though, really, as much I as obviously want to promote ACK, I have to admit that the set of people willing to play an ACK game at all is going to be pretty small, so to charge for a game might seriously limit your audience. Usually with things of a retro-nature, you're much more likely to find willing hobbyists who'd want to try your game if you make it free -- look at the whole interactive fiction world: sure, you can buy nifty versions of some IF games that include extras, like Robb has done (psst! Robb, check your PMs), but part of what's made that small community be vibrant is that 99% of what's made is playable for free.
