How 'bout you just sum his position up for us, Itgirl?itgirl wrote:1. William Brynteson (deceased)

Obviously! They found his driver license I hear.Ice Cream Jonsey wrote:I am just saying that it really ruins the credibility of atheists when they claim that Christ doesn't exist. Claiming he isn't a white hippie? Fine. But come on - obviously there was this guy Christ 2,000 years ago.
Look, it's complete and utter horseshit. Everyone is so afraid of the christ-faces that they've forgotten a burden of proof for Jesus. You can come up with a colorful guess, you know, shovel forth all the creativity from those D&D bio sections in pandering to christers or not understanding the FAITH part of your religion.
It's just a guess. No one proved that he existed, no one will. I've got nothing against the Jesus fanfic you guys cook up when you're stoned, tweaking, or whatever you call it. Though, when you back up those guesses with a work of fiction and tell me "of course" and "obviously", then you're full of shit.
If you need to pretend there's a solid historical backing for your religious belief, then you've failing your FAITH check, ASSHOLE!
If you look at my original post. I'm attempting to substantiate the Jesus issue. So, I am not saying it's obvious he didn't exist. I'm leaning toward him being so far removed from the Jesus of the bible that it's unfair to say Jesus existed, and it should be said that he was inspired by actual events.
Worst part is that the right can apply the tool of doubt to FUCKING EVOLUTION and we can't apply it to the EXISTENCE OF A HISTORICALLY UNDOCUMENTED JEW FROM 2000 YEARS AGO. What the fuck? Honestly, I couldn't give a fuck if Jesus existed or not, but I'm going to start screeching if anyone claims to KNOW.
Good point Bobby!

You live in Herndon now?4-5. Don't fucking know. Not the husband. Or Vitriola's ex-boyfriend who lives too fucking close to me in Herndon Virginia.
My company's main office is in Ashburn. So, uh, next time I'm visiting the mothership, dinner?

DC, actually. V's ex is in H. I live in Columbia Heights, specifically. I work on The Mall. Still live in Atlanta but work full time in DC. Am likely to move to DC full time very soon, but that's a long and boring story.bruce wrote:You live in Herndon now?

So, yeah. I am a slave to public transportation but it can get one pretty much anywhere in the metro area.

Don't know if any or all of this was directed at me, but uhh...sorry, and ummm, ok, and it's Silver Spring, not Springs, unlike other cities in upstate New York that truly are "Springs," and Dad said the majority of thought was that Jesus was an amalgamation of several people, maybe one standout, but several people doing the same thing at the same time, and Paul wrote a buncha stuff down and made it sound cooler because, you know, then he'd be cooler.Vitriola wrote:My ex is in Annandale. Ben 'Pinback' lived in Herndon when he was there. A friend of mine lives in Silver Springs. Please tell Worm that Jesus was a real person, and rather important for his time, without all the Bible bullshit that people made up later.
To paraphrase.
And while Jebus could fix the Beltway, no way he could fix the Perimeter.

Even though it's completely anecdotal; Thanks, an amalgamation means inspiration. It's unfair to call that existing.itgirl wrote:Dad said the majority of thought was that Jesus was an amalgamation of several people, maybe one standout, but several people doing the same thing at the same time, and Paul wrote a buncha stuff down and made it sound cooler because, you know, then he'd be cooler.
Even then, that's a historical theory based on conjecture and lines of reasoning, which can be made as sound as you please it. However, there is little (no?) independent historical verification of a man who was such a *rabble rouser* in his time.
Look, I don't know or care why people need to go backwards and validate and romanticize an inherently lost religion. Is it so we all get along? A little submission here succession there, and everyone is happy? Well, I'm not.
It's obscene the throw up your hands as proof of the bullshit you spew. People reason a Jesus existed. I don't care either way, but absolutism on either side, especially with such a fundamental lack of evidence is something I do manage to care about. "Ah her dad was a history professor, THIS WILL SHUT THIS GUY UP TOTALLY", come on, that's fucking insane. It's just as likely that Jesus was invented that he actually inspired those words.
By gum! The only historical document that is seriously held up as proof of Jesus is the bible. With that in mind you might start saying Adam and Eve existed.

Uh. I don't fucking care, dude. I was just telling because V asked me to. I don't really give a fuck, I'm Jewish anyway. I wasn't trying to shut anybody up. I was just saying my father was an interesting person to have a dinner conversation with, in general, and about this topic, in particular, but obviously, I didn't care enough about this topic, in particular, to even recall anything he said on the topic.
Cheese.
Cheese.
I don't think it's pandering to the jesusfreaks to say that a guy with a similar name might have existed and done some things that people exaggerated into a bullshit religion. That's not enough to make them happy. In fact, during the crusades it would have been enough to get your tounge cut off to say that Jesus was just a man.Worm wrote:Look, I don't know or care why people need to go backwards and validate and romanticize an inherently lost religion. I don't think anyone on this board is really religious so I'm not sure what the argument is.
I just remember Itgirl's Dad saying there were thousands of documents about Jesus, most were not for public consumption, you can't Google that shit, but that a scholar who could wait in a waiting list for 2 years could view these documents. At least, the ones the Church wanted you to see. But this is only my recollection, and he WAS drunk.
