I'm back.
Because Pinback is MAH BOY, I'll post a trip update over on Monto Rusa. (www.montorusa.com). You need to register an account there to see any Life Trax posts, but it is highly worth it.
CGG, I got your e-mail regarding the "failed to connect to the database" message that you saw. Two things have been going on:
1) My webhost (http://www.poehosting.com) performed an upgrade at some point between 9pm and 12. So you may have encountered that.
2) With the upgrade to phpBB 2.0.4, there is a problem that affects AOL customers. The short of it is that I should have upgraded to 2.0.3 and left it at that. The phpBB guys are basically using parts of everyone's IP address for session IDs. If yours happens to change (like it does with AOL and Compuserve) mid-session, then it will fuck things up. The helpful response that the phpBB crew gave Chet (the guy who runs my webhost) is that he should try to get AOL to stop doing things this way. Actually, while Chet is doing that I decided that I can best help out by transmuting sand into gold. We should have an equal chance of success.
If your bulletin board software can't handle what AOL does, then sorry, but your BBS software is frigging broken. I really like the "look" of this BBS. OK, I hate the emoticon window that shows up to on the "post" screen, but other than that I am pretty happy. I like the color scheme and layout. phpBB isn't perfect, but up until now it was useable and familiar. Because the devs happen to exist on another planet and are arrogant besides, it really dampens my enthusiasm to continue to use this software. Who knows what they will decide to implement next? They have already knocked out compatibility with a load of previous templates, this one included. If that's not "sacred" then what is? What if they decide that the contents of one's database is going to have to be sacrificed next?
(An aside: for anyone wondering why I choose to program in Hugo, it's because every one of the qualities listed above are completely absent from Kent Tessman. I am not saying that they ARE in Mike Roberts and Graham Nelson; don't infer that. They aren't. But Kent would never tell me to go get AOL or Microsoft to do something if I found a glitch in the Hugo executable, unlike the phpBB guys.)
So, let's see how things play out for the next couple of weeks. I think the only active poster using AOL is Gerrit -- Gerrit, I would suggest copying your text before you hit "submit" to your clipboard by pressing Control-A and Control-C if you have a long post. That way, you'll still have access to your content if you post and the board burps at you. If you continue to get invalid session pages at a good pace, please let me know. You will honestly not bug me if you see it 20 times in the next few days and write me 20 mails. This is info I want in order to make a decision on just what to do. (If anyone else is getting them, please let me know as well.) I want this place to be completely problem-free for everyone, and if it means that I have to go into the code and implement some workarounds that I have seen people talk about, or attempt to re-create this template from a "known good" 2.0.4 template, I will gladly do so. I really enjoy the community that we've all put together here, and I don't want to see it erode by route of crappy software.
