Cable TV and social standing

Post by AArdvark »

Someone mentioned the fact that my basic cable (7.50 a month) is called welfare cable. The only reason I have it at all is to avoid rabbit ears on the tv or a roof antenna. Balls!
now I have to start shopping at the Salvation Army store and dig thru tash cans downtown! What a bummer.

If I could get ESPN for $7.50 a month, I'd do it so that my brother could watch it in his bedroom. Right now we've got Directv and another box will run me an extra $5 a month.

They probably only call it "Welfare Cable" because "Homeless Cable" doesn't work, what with you needing a home for cable and everything.

Shit, I WISH I could get basic cable for $7.50. Even with Loafergirl's mad hookup skillZ, I pay like high 20's for basic.

Welfare cable, whatever, I don't watch enough TV to warrant it. I basically watch Howard's E! show and catch some hockey games. Cable's just there so I have something - ANYTHING - to watch when I want to just veg. I have absolutely no desire in movie channels, digicable, PVR, or any of that shit. If it wasn't a solid guarantee that whatever's on free air antenna at any given time totally sucks ass (except for half an hour on Fox when they play Simpsons) then I would just do that.

I think when I get a place I'm going to get me some fucking rabbit ears. I'll probably stay with basic cable. At least they didn't nail you with something like "retarded cable" or "gay cable" that would of made you cry.

Frankly, I don't see the point ... having all those stations are nice but my room has cable with out a box and all that direct what not and such and I am pretty happy with it.
Good point Bobby!

I hear it call budget cable, antenna cable, and all sorts of other strange things but welfare cable is a new one by me. And Straw you're paying for standard, you're getting things past channel 19 =)

Ah the cruelties of working for cable........

Basic cable for us is $40, and with the cable modem, it hurt me too much to pay $90+ bills so now, it's just rabbit ears for us.

Would it kill you to pick up a book or go outside or get social???? I'm not saying I don't watch TV, infact I watch only Gilmore Girls (Lauren Graham is hot), Smallville, Suckvivor and occasionally CSI. 4 hours max. TV sicks otherwise. Actually I spend more time with a radio than I do with TV. Don and Mike 3-7 EST Alex Jones 12-3 EST(net).

TV sucks.

That would `splain it. I assumed it was referred to as "basic" because everyone else has all this fancy shit. Didn't realize there was a lower option...

See now, to me, "Welfare Cable" sounds like a misnomer and not unlike an oxymoron.

It was always my understanding, and this is based on absolutely nothing other than shit I've heard, that in order to receive many welfare benefits, one can not have a cable TV subscription in their name. Kinda makes sense. I think we can all agree cable teevee is pretty low on the hierarchy of needs.

No need. In addition to cable, we also have DSL.

Oh yeah? Ask Robb what he did in order to afford cable tv 10 years ago.

We had cable for about $50 a month, 1 step up from basic. All the cable in the world still won't get me free dubbed episodes of Gasaraki or Full Metal Panic, so we got rid of it.

Before a large contingent of posters calling themselves "Robb's Ex-JOHNS" starts posting, I would like to say that my roommate and I scrounged the campus for soda cans, which we took back for the five cent deposit in New York.

I have yet to fuck for cable. But the keyword is YET.
