Unity of Command

Post by pinback »

Everyone hold your horses, but there might actually be a WW2 hex-based, turn-based wargame out there that normal people can actually play and enjoy.

I've bought thousands of WW2 hex-based, turn-based wargames over the years, and the exact same thing happens every time:

1. I load it up.
2. I play the tutorial.
3. I fire up the first scenario, with ten thousand units on a side.
4. I get tired, shut it down, and never touch it again.

In Unity of Command, I got to #3, actually played the scenario, lost, and am looking forward to playing it again.

This is unprecedented. It just may be the greatest computer wargame ever made, unless you are one of those... well, you know. Those wargame types. None of you are those.

STAY TUNED! Very exciting.
Am I a hero? I really can't say. But, yes.

Oddly, I was just browsing through a circa 1999 issue of PC Gamer that declared "War Games are dead, they're a genre that have been left behind" but WWII or other hex based PC games were just more accessible stylings of tabletop games.

Take the latest (and currently in beta) game in the Mechwarrior franchise...

The developers basically admit that they were looking to offer a less complicated (dice rolling and number crunching happens out of view of the player) version of the traditional Battletech / MW tabletop game. And its quite fun (and accessible, as its on a "free to play" model) after the last lance (small group of 3 to 7 mechs) are deployed and the arbitrary cool down period is in effect.

Getting around Pinback's general distaste for scenarios, maybe an all multiplayer hex based game would satisfy him?

Would it? Huh? Would it?
