The Pinback Show, LIVE on KHUM!
Tune in to KHUM Radio on Saturday, April 21, from 2 to 7 PM for the BEN PARRISH SHOW.
Larry Trask had a good run, but (for one day only, at any rate) he is OUT. Time for the PINBACK ERA OF RADIO to begin.
Be sure not to miss it! Or at least a small part of it. Five hours is a long goddamn time to listen to that godforsaken radio station.

Am I a hero? I really can't say. But, yes.

Then you should, of course, play the eponymous song by the eponymous group, "War" by, uh, "War."pinback wrote:The 3-4 hour? NOTHING BUT SONGS ABOUT HOW WAR IS BAD.
Sort of like the song "Drive" by "The Cars".
Don't forget "One Tin Soldier" by Coven.
"Where have all the flowers gone" by Peter Paul and Mary.
"I Feel Like I'm Fixin To Die" by Country Joe And The Fish
"The Night they Drove old Dixie Down" by Joan Baez
I had no idea; Wikipedia has an article "List of anti-war songs" and contains hundreds of songs, from the Civil war through Iraq.

Re: The Pinback Show, LIVE on KHUM!
The site doesn't really say where they are, but I got the implication they're in California, thus we should presume that's 2-7 Pacific Daylight Time/Phoenix Standard, 3-8 Mountain Daylight, 4-9 Central Daylight, and 5-10pm Eastern Daylight time.pinback wrote:Tune in to KHUM Radio on Saturday, April 21, from 2 to 7 PM for the BEN PARRISH SHOW.
I also tried the streaming link, it doesn't seem to work. More than doesn't work, I passed the URL to Winamp after downloading it specifically so I could listen, and Winamp froze.
The url http://lostcoast.streamguys.us/khum-lo.m3u does not respond properly.

What are you using to capture it? Firefox just returns a blank page. I give Winamp their link and I get a 404 error. I get BBC world Service streaming just fine.Flack wrote:All the streaming links work perfectly fine.
I figured it out; the station gives their id as part of the URL. It fails with the id; it works without it.
They're playing some commercials and identified that "you're listening to KHUM."
I just tried it without the identifier, just going to http://lostcoast.streamguys.us/ works fine in Firefox (it's still a blank page but the sound plays), but using their identifier causes it to fail. And trying it as a URL in Winamp doesn't work. It identifies it but it doesn't play.

Re: The Pinback Show, LIVE on KHUM!
Here's something you might not be aware of, Ben, is that contrary to popular belief, taking payola is not illegal. Or rather, not completely illegal.pinback wrote:Tune in to KHUM Radio on Saturday, April 21, from 2 to 7 PM for the BEN PARRISH SHOW.
It's like this, someone gives you five hundred dollars to run their song a few times each day during the week. So when you're on the air you run their song. That's illegal.
But, someone gives you five hundred dollars to run their song a few times during the week. Now, before each time you run the song on the air, you say, "Here's a song that I'd like you to listen to, because I took payola to play it." That, however, is perfectly legal.
The weird thing is it's only illegal to take unannounced payola. If you announce before playing a song that you accepted money to do so, that's perfectly legal.

I realize you're just being a condescending pedant, but this is a Federal law. Actually, I got interested in this because a couple of DeeJays at a local radio station were doing their morning program, and as part of their schtick one of them actually says, "We have this new song we want to introduce because we have to, we took payola and agreed to play it."Flack wrote:Is it legal in every time zone?
The other said, "Yeah, major payola, big time."
I nearly swallowed my tongue because that word is a no-no, they never say such a thing, I figured it's like publicly admitting you murdered someone because I "knew" payola was illegal.
Then I found out it's only illegal if you do not tell the audience at the time the song is broadcast.

I always liked how corporations have skewered any semblance of law to their favor, but this one relic remains, somehow. It's ok for corporations to act as sociopathic monsters, literally writing laws for their dignity-free congressmen to splurt onto the breasts of American citizens everywhere.... but boy, don't do PAYOLA.

As the chairman of the board of two corporations and the manager of his own LLC, I'd like to point out that - and it was someone else who did it - that all of the characteristics of sociopathy as defined in the DSM all apply to corporations. (Note that sociopath and psychopath are the same thing.)Ice Cream Jonsey wrote:It's ok for corporations to act as sociopathic monsters,
The "Hare Psychopathy Checklist" gives the 20 characteristics of a psychopath:
Factor 1: Personality "Aggressive narcissism"
Glibness/superficial charm (Nissan: We are driven)
Grandiose sense of self-worth
Pathological lying (Hi! I'm Joe Isusu)
Cunning/manipulative (New Coke)
Lack of remorse or guilt
Shallow affect (genuine emotion is short-lived and egocentric)
Callousness; lack of empathy
Failure to accept responsibility for own actions (the whole purpose of incorporating is to allow the owners of a corporation to escape responsibility)
Factor 2: Case history "Socially deviant lifestyle".
Need for stimulation/proneness to boredom
Parasitic lifestyle
Poor behavioral control (BP and the Gulf of Mexico spill)
Lack of realistic long-term goals
Impulsivity
Irresponsibility
Juvenile delinquency
Early behavior problems
Revocation of conditional release
Traits not correlated with either factor
Promiscuous sexual behavior (Playboy Magazine)
Many short-term marital relationships (ITT marrying and divorcing all those other corporations)
Criminal versatility (Enron)
Acquired behavioural sociopathy/sociological conditioning (Item 21: a newly identified trait i.e. a person relying on sociological strategies and tricks to deceive)
Looks like corporations have almost all of these, too.
