Our Happier 2013. All of us!

Post by ICJ »

2012 was the worst year of my life in many respects. Mostly because I spent the entire year thinking that the universe owed me something. That other people were responsible for MY happiness. That I just deserved ... whatever, because I am a "nice guy."

Not any more!

The number one change I am going to make in 2013 is to take control of my life, in so much as I will become a content person based on decisions I make and things I do.

Specifically, here is how my 2013 will be different:

Writing More

My plan was to have a little novella to go along with Cyberganked that I could sell on the Amazon store. I made an opening that I really like. Then it sputtered. And why? Well, I was going back into my old habits of hate-reading. (More on that in a second.) There is no reason why I can't bust out a novella by the end of January 2013. That is my first goal.

Program More

Along the same lines, it took me five months to get a work in progress ready for Cyberganked, the game. I'm happier with the progress on this, but at the same time there's a lot of empty nights I waste.

Now, I need Milker's haunted house for one more go-around... but I could otherwise have Cyberganked finished in 2013. This would really make me happy, as other people are no doubt making Bard's Tale-style games and I'd like to hit the market first.

More Swimming

Man, I am the master at making excuses why I can't go to the gym. The backstories we used to make when playing "Clue" don't compare to my ability to, on the fly, tell you why I couldn't possibly go swimming. No more of this! I think the most pathetic thing in the world is a guy who lives by himself, is unhappy with his health and STILL doesn't work out. Plus, swimming is hardly exercise because I don't feel like ending it all.

Girls Are Gonna Be Fun Again

Whether my girlfriend of the last two years and I get back together as we might-but-might-not-who-knows or not, I am going to RELAX and enjoy the company of girls. I am going to get to know them, not be nervous and just be myself.

I'm not "nervous" really, but I come off that way for the first few dates. Oh, and girls on dating sites are all crazy. But aside from those things, I am going to enjoy dating like I used to.

No More Hate-Reading. Except...

I figured out why I hate-read sites. It's because I signed up for them as "Ice Cream Jonsey" and people think ICJ is a "nice guy." So if I truly feel I have to hate-read, I am going to get a new IP address, make up a new on-line identity and then troll the shit out of the communities I despise.

No More Mister Fists In Eyes Waaargh

Oh have I mastered the joke where I am the butt!! My poor shitty life! No more. People are tired of hearing about what a fuck-up I think I am. Christ, I'm one step away from management at my job, I can't play the fuck-up card.

I still believe that real comedy comes from looking inwards, but I am going to be more upbeat. :)

No More Spending All My Money On Arcade Projects

Speaks for itself.

I'm Getting My Teeth Whitened

I don't care what chemicals they are going to throw at them, these things are going to be pristine by the end of February 2013.

So I don't know if I'd call these resolutions, but I am going to remember this thread in 2013 and have a better year, a better experience on earth, and give you all a better ME.

EDIT: I have edited the title. Let's all have a happier 2013!

Ben, you made a lot of good points from 10 years ago. So maybe I should turn back the clock and collect some wisdom from "that" Ben?

Also, look. I was boring people. The one thing ICJ can never allow himself to be is in the third person and boring.

Those sound like some pretty positive changes, ICJ! The hate reading thing in particular, I mean, you know I don't get it but it just seems like a waste of energy and it adds nothing but negativity to your life.

I think the key to life is balance and scheduling. You can do anything if you just set aside the time to do it. Like, look at all the time I set aside to eat and boy did that work! :)

The most important thing to "resolutions" is to post them where you can see them every day so you will be reminded of your goals. Print them out and hang them up at work or tape them to the mirror in your bathroom -- just somewhere you will see them and be reminded of your goals.

I look forward to reading your novella and playing your new game and being blinded by your white teeth!

Yes, it makes me mad, makes me a worse person to be around and the latest studies show that more than three helpings of hate-reading a day leads to dickrot. I don't want dickrot!

I have toyed with the idea of getting them tattooed, or perhaps just scrawling them on my chest with the thinking man's tattoo: the Sharpie.

Anyway, thanks. As soon as the chislers in my brother's fantasy football league pay up, I'm throwing that money on my teeth.

You mean "more" dickrot, right?

Most of my anger comes from visiting Yahoo on a daily basis, so 2013 will be the year of me never, ever going to Yahoo.

But now I need a new site to tell me when people died. RECOMMENDATIONS?

I thought twitter was the fastest maybe-true source of information in the world right now?

Yeah, but Ben can't "do" Twitter very well, because he hates people so much.

Even though it's not 2013, I'd like to do an update. I've touched on everything but the swimming. In my defense, it's 21 degrees out.

Everything else is going great. I decided to take the week off anyway, so the writing and programming is going well.

Perhaps a Zoloft Diary-esque personal, public blog detailing your healing process would be a good thing to do.

Yeah, I got a better idea. How about you register thingshaveahabit.com and then cram the e-receipt up your ass?

Okay, that was a heartfelt recommendation, and you got all nasty with me. Is that part of it? Is "BEING A TOTAL ASSBAG TO MY FRIENDS" part of your 2013 plan?

Good point. I'll add "decrease negativity" as one of my 2013 goals.
