One week until Beta.
omgomgomgomgomg.
(As opposed to the "Premium Beta" which was kind of the pre-Beta which is kind of the Alpha. It's all very confusing.)

It is not something I would do again, but you know what, here is how the FLOW goes, in my opinion.
As a kid and teen, I pirated almost everything. I didn't pay anyone who worked on Elite or its sequels money.
I was able to get a job at an Electronics Boutique because I knew a lot about video games. If I didn't warez them, I simply wouldn't have the breadth of knowledge.
I went from EB to Xerox in a QA role and one question I was asked was if I troubleshoot any of the games with people. I kind of did! I kind of helped people get their games working! (I absolutely knew how to troubleshoot a computer in general.)
I've then gone from QA to developer roles to automation engineering and whatever else. It's a life I am happy with, except today on IRC. I can pay back Braden as one of the guys whose stuff I filched in the 80s. I can do that, at least.
Well, ONE time, $150, Jesus.

The beta is real, and it's spectacular! (Paul: I know this is paraphrased from Seinfeld, please do not link to videos or otherwise quote Seinfeld.)
Main updates that you can tell immediately are:
1. The galaxy map is completely fuckable. The trade routes -- THE TRADE ROUTES. It's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen.
2. Cockpit lighting has gone from passable to fucking amazing.
3. The suns... I... There are no words.
4. There are missions!
5. There is FUEL! So you can't just jump anywhere, which is good because now instead of 8, there are 55 star systems available! Only 399,999,999,945 to go!
6. You can add friends! And TALK to them over your comm system!
7. Space stations still disappearing status: YES!
8. Still takes forever to drop out of supercruise status: YES!
9. The... the galaxy map. You guys.
Anyway, this is far and away the greatest game that has ever or could ever exist. The beta is $75. "I'M NOT PAYING THAT MU---" Just do it. It is the only game in history that is worth $75.

Other than the last episode, just to see what the hoopla was all about, I never watched Seinfeld. About the only things I know about the show waspinback wrote:The beta is real, and it's spectacular! * It was about nothing.
* Elaine determined whether a guy was good enough to sleep with by whether she'd use one of her precious contraceptive sponges she could no longer purchase.
* The mailman was an evil guy who died in a fire in his truck quoting the announcer viewing the Hindenburg disaster.
* They spent one whole show looking for their car in a mall parking lot, then discovering the lights had been left on and the battery was dead.
* Kramer's first name was Cosmo.
* His best friend, the fat guy whose name I don't know (and don't want to bother looking up), worked for Steinbrenner's New York Yankees baseball team, and had a girlfriend whom he decided to marry after he knocked her up because the cheap condoms he got were defective, only she died at the altar or shortly before.
* "No soup for you!" - The Soup Nazi.
Other than that, I didn't really know the show, never watched it otherwise, and I would not have recognized the quote.

Well, I think he baited me. He should just have said nothing, and I would not have responded.Ice Cream Jonsey wrote:Paul, can you try to stay on topic a little more than you've been doing? This is just a request. Or maybe make a "catch all" thread for stuff like this.
This thread is about Elite, not really Seinfeld.
This is just a request.
How about you enable editing, which you were supposed to do two years ago as you promised. Then I can remove unnecessary material, or if you don't want it expunged, I can move it to the "misc unimportant Tdarcos posts" thread in the Troll Room. This is also a request.
So let's get back on topic here, and let me ask, what is so special about this game that getting into the alpha or beta pre-release is worth paying about 3 times as much as the typical premium priced games? I mean, the most they can ordinarily get away with <s>gouging</s> err I mean charging for a game is $59.95, what makes this game worth paying $160 for the all-access pass, an an obscenely shocking (and dreadfully overpriced) $75 for the regular beta of the game?
And I will sit back and listen,.

That should read "$150 for the all-access pass".
Now, I will sit back and listen.

All I said was "please do not quote Seinfeld", to which you responded with a page of Seinfeld quotes. This is why we can't have nice things.Tdarcos wrote:Well, I think he baited me. He should just have said nothing, and I would not have responded.
No, don't go!Then I can remove unnecessary material

No! I want an answer. Answer the question and I'll shut up. So answer the question and you'll shut me up. Otherwise it's obvious you have no idea why you threw obscene amounts of money away on this worthless thing.
The alcoholic who can't manage to do a one hour a week show and claims he wanted to do a radio show for real is calling me a disaster. Pot. Kettle. Black. You're a disaster.
