In this thread, I will document my experiences hiding a Raspberry Pi somewhere in the new house where it will work autonomously.

This would have gone better, but:

- We are having floors redone on the ground level of the house.

- The floors were not level.

- The contractors poured something to "level" the floor. Like cement.

- This leaked through the subfloor (subfloor!) and into the basement, getting onto some shelves. Luckily there was nothing on the shelves.

I might "slow down" hiding Raspberry Pis all over the house juuuuust yet.

BBC World Service radio reports about a woman working on this for Third-World countries. It's called the Banana Pi. It's a Raspberry Pi, an Arduino or some other single-board computer, a transparent plastic case, wi-fim adapter, a 10-watt solar panel and battery with a transformer / inverter so it can be converted to a USB power supply and run even when the sun is not shining or run at night. Will have a 32GB memory card preloaded with a lot of things including music and movies, plus a web server so some of these people in those areas that have smart phones or tablets will have something to connect to and things to look at, like a Web experience even where there's no Internet.

Have you considered something like that? Put the 'Pi in the attic, either plugged in or hooked up to a battery and solar panel, and use a wi-fi to talk to it? SSL to log in or using the web server.

First, the Banana Pi is a Raspberry Pi clone with a few different components (dedicated USB lane, dedicated SATA 2 port, more ram, fasteer proc, wifi, etc.)

Secondly, why are you suggesting an alternative? You didn't even ask what he is trying to do with the Raspberry Pi and he hasn't told us except that he wanted to hide it.

Right. I'd accept recommendations for the Salami Pi if that is what I wanted to do, but not banana.
