Who's stupider, Dan Quayle or Sarah Palin?

Post by Tdarcos »

I responded to the item about the new Ghostbusters movie by pointing out that one of the main problemns was, if they wanted to use an all-female cast for the main characters, why couldn't they have gotten funny women?

I compared it to John McCain's choice of Sarah Palin, someone who is arguably almost as stupid as Dan Quayle. But then I thought, mying I'm overestimating her.

She reminds me of Dan Quayle because of the numbher of really bad faux pauw and bloopers she made. They were so obvious that Tina Fey's parody of her ("I can see Russia from my house") is sometimes thought to be something Palin said.

So let's hear your opinions.

I've heard about Sarah Palin before. I've never heard about Dan Quayle; this is the first time I see the name.

So in my book, that makes Palin the stupid one.

I live in a different continent, sir. Dan Quayle seems to never have made it to the international news. Palin did.

CO, RealNC is not an American citizen.

Long story short -- not that I think American history is something RealNC is dying to know about, but for rather for context -- George H. W. Bush picked a Senator from Indiana named Dan Quayle to be his running mate for the 1988 Presidential Election.

Quayle wasn't good on TV and didn't do himself many favors. After the Vice Presidents for a particular ticket are picked, the running mates also have one televised debate against each other. The topic of Quayle's (in)experience came up, Quayle said that he was just as experienced as John F. Kennedy was when he ran for office. This is true: Quayle had 12 years in office before running for VP and JFK 14 before running for President.

Anyway, during the debate, Lloyd Bentsen (a Texas Senator running on the Democrat ticket with Michael Dukakis) responded with, "Senator, I served with Jack Kennedy. I knew Jack Kennedy. Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy." Everyone lost their shit.

(Now, the Republican debates are like that ALL THE TIME, it's great.)

There were some other gaffs that I am sure Paul would like to tell us all about.

In 1992, Dan Quayle (then vice-president of the United States) attended a school spelling bee. When one of the students wrote the word "potato" on the blackboard (spelled correctly), Quayle prompted him to add a letter "e" to the end of it.

One of the other things Dan Quayle did - which has been hinted here - was publicly comment in a press conference about his disapproval of Murphy Brown's decision to have a child as a single mother.

The producers of Murphy Brown got probably a whole season of jokes where they were able to use Dan Quayle, criticizing Murphy Brown for being an unwed mother.

Come on. Trump, Cruz and Rubio spend the first 30 minutes of each debate making fun of each other. Don't make this about me.
