The SPAM Poll
Not to be confused with the SPAM POLE, which is almost entirely different.

As a kid I used to occasionally spend the night at my grandma's house. For breakfast, she would prepare Spam and eggs. It was less of a culinary choice and more driven by economics, I think.
I honestly had no idea anyone other than poor people ate Spam until a couple of years ago while eating Hawaiian in Vegas. Sure enough, they do. Last year I went to Hawaii and confirmed the fact first hand. Every burger shop we stopped at had a Spam and pineapple burger on the menu, served with a hula skirt and inside a coconut.
There is a Hormel plant in Oklahoma City. It's next to a set of train tracks, and I've been stuck there before while waiting for a train to pass. The smell downwind will cure most Spam cravings anyone might have.

Not coincidentally, I just placed this very item into my body less than 15 minutes ago! Mmm-mm!Spam and eggs.
"Spam Musubi" = grilled spam with teriyaki and sushi rice, wrapped in seaweed, like a hand roll. Not to be missed!Hawaiian

You NEVER had Spam? Go out right now and get a can, preferably of the reduced sodium (but NOT reduced fat) version, fry some of that shit up and go to town.
It is a flavor unlike anything else, and though some find it nauseating beyond description, god damn.

Favorite SPAM dish: Hawaiian breakfast plate, which is a scoop or two of white rice, a slice or two of fried SPAM, and one or two eggs prepared the way you like (over-easy for me, please.)
Search this forum for Ben's Famous "Dyin' Hawaiian" burger. I only made it once, but it was still the best thing ever.

What's the deal here anyways?
I was reading some reviews online that stated Spam just tastes like salty ham, you recommend that people buy the low sodium ham, which should taste like less salty ham, or a lot like ham, I like ham, so why not just cut to the chase and purchase ham instead? If you compare the amount of ounces in a can of Spam, the price point is very reasonably within that of regular ham, therefore, what is the benefit of buying Spam?

Hormel's current stance is that "SPAM" is a contraction of "Spiced Ham" (though in the past, they went with "Shoulder of Pork & Ham") so it definitely resembles ham more than, say, any other lunch meat, but saying "it tastes like ham" is, in my opinion, incorrect.
If you like ham, by all means, buy ham instead of SPAM. But they are definitely not substitutes for each other (even if that was Hormel's original intent back in WW2 days.)
