What's the first thing you install on a new computer?

Mac: Suicide Prevention Reminder App

Is the Suicide Prevention Program through the App Store? That's optimistic of them.

I guess I need the following to get my stuff done: IntelliJ, Atom, sublimeText. Photostop. Git, Java, Hugo (though if I check out a game's repo I have that) and then FileZilla for FTP stuff. putty, too, at least on Windows.

On the Mac there's also an app I like for playing Hangman. It's cool because it's all audio.

I can check which driver specifically got installed first from the cd-rom of my most recent motherboard if you need me to?

Honestly I am not really sure because I never would have imagined until now that which driver specifically gets installed first from my chipset dvd would ever get turned into such a big deal...if I had to guess, I would say that the very first thing I install is the audio driver?

Firefox. That's the only time I'll consciously use IE, to downlioad Firefox on a box that doesn't have it.

Same thing when I was setting up my Mac box, I used the built-in browser to install Firefox.

I'm not going to judge you. I found Firefox worked better several years ago and never tried Opera again. Chrome has a problem with certain HTML commands to tell a web browser when you print the page to do a page break, a command sequence that Firefox and IE both honor. Can't remember what the code was, that was from a job I was doing about 3 or 4 years ago.

What's mlocate?

I mean, the whole idea is that if you use your computer to get things done - even if it's for hobbies - You'll try to find the tools that are of use to you. Cop killers would download the app "Donut Shop Finder." KKK members would download the apps "Fried Chicken Store Locator" and "Watermelon Patch finder." Pedophiles would use the "find a store" feature on Chuck-E-Cheese's website. Or look up the nearest Catholic Church and find out when the Priest is holding mass or otherwise not busy with their other usual practices.

Anyone seriously interested in getting a task done will try to get tools to assist them.

I don't eat cheeseburgers every day, it's probably been a week since I had some.

Oh, since the original question was "The first thing you install on your computer is?" does not necessarily mean software. Typically the first device I'll install on a computer is a 7-port USB hub. When the computer only has 4 ports, plugging in mouse, keyboard and network Wi-Fi adapter, it don't leave you much. Plus you have to go to the back to add something. Kind of difficult when you're in a wheelchair and your ability to root around the back is severely restricted.

I remember when I was doing tech support on computers people had under their desk, I'd end up crawling under, and depending on what I was doing, to save pressure on my knees I'd either be lying on my back or my stomach, connecting something, and invariably someone would come by, seeing the enormous fat guy lying under a desk and ask if I had fallen or if I was OK or hurt.

This way I can plug in a jump drive, SD Card reader/writer, backup drives, trackball, cellphone and camera charge cables, and it's all conveniently located on top of this computer.

I haven't eaten slop in over two years. In case you forgot, I spent two months in a rehabilitation facility after being diagnosed with congestive heart failure. And one thing I was told to avoid is salt. Ramen is horrible for salt, check the label and the percentage of the daily max for salt in one package is huge!

Beside that, I never used to look at the label, but have you seen the calorie count for ONE PACKAGE? It's comparable to a Big Mac.
