Do you have a steering wheel accessory? The one thing that killed these cool ass driving games was the lack, well, my lack of, a steering wheel input. I could never get the hang of Test Drive, Spy hunter or any of the other C64 driving games using a joystick or keyboard.

Great question. I don't remember if the ST was still on the original 2600 joysticks or not. If so, then I imagine that at least paddles would work. We will need to investigate further, after I get that PRINCE of a game running on mine.

Yeah it always was a head-scratcher to me as to why you couldn't control Pole Position with the paddles on the 2600, yet you could in Night Driver for the same system.
