Image search says the guy with beard and glasses is someone named James Lipton. I thought it was Salman Rushdie.
The big question now is, will the late Mr. Lipton be buried, or just dropped into boiling water until he dissolves?

The guy in the picture is Peter Wyngard, a British actor. If it wasn't that it said "Flash Gordon" I might have thought it was Anton LaVey, founder of the Church of Satan.

The guy that looks like Odo from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine that appears before the Flash Gordon villain is Freeman John Dyson, known for inventing the Dyson Sphere. That's a concept that says as a society advances it will keep using more amounts of energy, eventually it would put a sphere around its sun to capture all the energy that goes nowhere important and is otherwise wasted.
