ATMORE, Ala. — Kenneth Eugene Smith, a 58-year-old convicted killer whose 2022 lethal injection was called off at the last minute because authorities couldn’t connect an IV line, is scheduled to be executed [tonight] at a south Alabama prison. Smith was convicted and sentenced to death for his role in a 1988 murder for hire.

Smith was recruited as a contract killer in the murder of Elizabeth Sennett. Her husband, Charles Sennett, organized the murder and was said to be dealing with debt and having an affair.

Elizabeth Sennett was stabbed and beaten to death in her home. Charles Sennett committed suicide as the investigation closed in on him.

Unless blocked by the U.S. Supreme Court, Alabama will attempt to put him to death with nitrogen gas Thursday night, a never used execution method that the state claims will be humane, but critics call cruel and experimental. Alabama plans to put a respirator mask over Smith’s face and replace the air he is breathing with pure nitrogen gas, causing him to die from lack of oxygen.

The execution will be the first attempt to use a new execution method since the 1982 introduction of lethal injection, now the most common execution method in the United States.

A federal appeals court on Wednesday concurred with another decision by a federal judge in Alabama that the state could carry out the execution. The U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday also declined to stop the execution.

“Two courts have now rejected Smith’s claims. I remain confident that the Supreme Court will come down on the side of justice, and that Smith’s execution will be carried out tomorrow,” Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall said on social media on Wednesday.

The moment will no doubt be closely watched by many as other states consider the practice.

What Is a Nitrogen Gas Execution?
The execution involves a mask that will be strapped to Smith’s face and deliver nitrogen gas. The method, known as nitrogen hypoxia, is intended to deprive Smith of oxygen.

The gas will be administered for at least 15 minutes or “five minutes following a flatline indication on the EKG, whichever is longer,” according to the state protocol.

I am not anti-death penalty, but death by suffocation seems cruel.

Melanie, the singer who performed at Woodstock in 1969 and had major pop hits with "Brand New Key" and "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)" in the early '70s, died Tuesday [Jan 24] at age 76. News of the death came from her publicity firm, Glass Onyon PR.

No information on the cause of death was immediately given. But Melanie - full name Melanie Safka - had been in the studio earlier this month working on a new record of cover songs, "Second Hand Smoke," for the Cleopatra label; it would have been her 32nd album, the label said.

So was that.

To me, it seems, he gets a painless death where he passes out from hypoxia, and then dies. Using a gas to suffocate as opposed to poison. I'm surprised no one thought of it before.

Oh wait, Dr. Kervorkian, after he lost his license and could not get medications to do assisted suicide, had a machine that either gave the person pure carbon dioxide or carbon monoxide, I forget which. People have been using carbon monoxide for decades to commit suicide, by running a car in a closed garage, then putting a hose in the tail pipe and routing the output into the car's interior.

In any event, I'll suffer no tears over his death.

In this context a hose means a garden hose, typically used to water lawns or shrubs, ect

But of course. Do-it-yourself closed garage suicides are usually done with whatever is readily available, e.g. a running car and a garden hose, a short rope and a ladder, or a tool to remove a garage door spring and, well, I think you can guess.

I don't know, death by Nitrous oxide Baloon doesn't sound too bad.

Probably deserved to seizure and flop like a fish on the table. You can't just kill pastor's wives for 1000$ and get away with it or be held in any sort of moral high ground such as assassinating a mob boss or whatever. Otherwise, I would have already started a Craig's List ad a looong time ago lol.

Good ol' DR DEATH!! He usually chose toxic chemicals.

Kenneth Eugene Smith executed by nitrogen hypoxia in Alabama, marking a first for the death penalty
Alabama carried out its planned execution of the condemned inmate Kenneth Eugene Smith on Thursday night using nitrogen hypoxia, a controversial and widely-contested death penalty method used for the first time in the United States. The execution took place at the William C. Holman Correctional Facility in Atmore at 8:25 p.m. local time, officials said.

According to the pool media report, Smith's last words were: "Tonight Alabama caused humanity to take a step backward. I'm leaving with love, peace and light. Thank you for supporting me. Love all of you."

So was that.

The government did not stab or beat that woman. False equivalency.

Smith, 58, was pronounced dead at 8:25 p.m. Thursday in an execution that lasted about 22 minutes. With a mask over his face pumping in pure nitrogen gas, Smith appeared to convulse for several minutes after the gas was turned on.

That does not sound painless. Death by Carbon Monoxide seems much more painless.

That's probably the case. Or perhaps Jonsey hasn't gotten around to giving it to you, or didn't know you didn't have it. When I originally wrote this, I wrote

All you have to remember is that the edit button works differently for different lengths of times in different forums in different ways for different people. Pretty simple, really.

phpBB3 allows for people to have different permissions and then different permission per forum. And it allows different forums to have different permissions. And for people to be in groups, and for those permissions to be different per forum. It's all a giant mess and I wish I could start over, but I can't. But this is why editing doesn't work.
